Strange mouth action

I hoping to get to the vets today but my 11 month old cocker spaniel (just finishing her first season) seems really under the weather and not herself. She's been doing this strange thing with her mouth - hard to describe, but you know when they're trying to chew something and they tilt their head up ? It's like that. Almost like she's got something on the back of her throat. I've had a look but can't see anything and she's eating and drinking as normal

Not much to go on but any ideas?! It's sooooioo hard when they're unwell Sad

Have you checked she hasn't got a chew wedged in there? That's the only time my hound does that.
Good luck at the vet

Stick your hand in there and check the top of her mouth. Sometimes they get sticks stuck there.

Excitedannie · 19/05/2023 07:29

Yes it's almost as though she's got something stuck - I try to look but haven't got enough hands!!!!! I've got a video appointment at 8am - hopefully she'll just tell me to take her in

My dog does this when she has something stuck in her teeth (or once in the roof of her mouth).

Mmmmpavlova · 19/05/2023 07:35

It could be an object like a stick stuck in there, or it could be a sore tooth or similar. These things can be very hard to see even in person and needs a hands-on vet exam most of the time.

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 19/05/2023 07:36

If you can’t get your hands in her mouth, sometimes I find gently massaging the gum areas from the outside helps.

Excitedannie · 19/05/2023 07:39

I really struggled with this little bundle when I first got her (puppy blues) but the last few months have been joyful - just like everyone says! And now she's not herself, I'm sooooooo worried!!!! My goodness these little furry things get right into our hearts don't they!

Oh and her breath stinks - even more than usual

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 19/05/2023 07:52

Her breath should not stink. She's only 11months old.

She might have stomach issues and reflux.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 19/05/2023 07:52

Mention the bad breath to the vet.

wildinthecountry · 19/05/2023 07:53

Do you have long hair OP?

No but my daughter does

Run your fingers along her teeth to see if anything is stuck to them

Really? She's been cleaning herself through her season so I thought there would be some element of acceptable stinkyness

I have on occasions pulled a long hair from my dogs mouth .

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 19/05/2023 07:56

Oh sorry, I've never had a girl, but as far as I know from my boys bad breath usually means a bad tooth, bad stomach, or they've eaten something rotten which then leads to a bad stomach.

Excitedannie · 19/05/2023 07:57

Ah interesting. I'm going to leave it with the vet to look at - I don't want to stress her out

And she's curled up in the tightest little ball Sad

Yes my gut feeling is it's something stuck in her tooth but I'm going to leave it to the professionals I think!!

Of course!

whowhatwerewhy · 19/05/2023 08:09

It could be stomach issues, my dog does this for a short while after eating. Vet prescribed indigestion medication.

Mine do this when they have acid tummy problems.

DustyLee123 · 19/05/2023 12:12

Any news OP ?

Excitedannie · 19/05/2023 13:38

Mmm well not really but vitals are ok. She had a really good rummage around in her mouth and saw that there was a bit of bleeding around a couple of teeth but gums looked healthy and temp/heartbeat etc all ok. She was actually very excited in the vets - typical - but she's now home and sooooo miserable. They've given me antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. I've managed to get the antibiotics in her the the Metacam has to be put on food but she's not eating. I'll give her a while otherwise I'll squirt it in the side of her mouth...

Aww I hope she's okay OP.

I don't know what this could be but I have an 8 year old cocker/springer cross who is the love of my life so know what it's like when they're not themselves.

He has Metacam occasionally for arthritis/joints if we've been on a walk and he's a little sore after, he won't eat it in food, I have to squeeze it in the side of his mouth between his teeth because he refuses to relax them 😂
