We have a beautiful 8 week old cocker who is doing so
well. We have a basket full of toys but would like recommendations for others please so we can rotate them.

We have a sniffle mat, a kong and a toy she needs to sniff and scratch at to find the treat. We have lots of other toys too, please tell me your dog’s favourite ones.

Thank you

Get a puppy canvas dummy so you can start her on search/hunt + retrieve. This will serve as both a toy but also for mental stimulation as it is what she is bred to do.
Read The Pet Gundog Puppy by Lez Graham basic training games etc you can do with her + her toys to help structure some of her play time.

Topple are fantastic food toys. My pup loves hers much more than a Kong.

Chuck it balls rather than tennis balls. We had a family dog who managed to swallow part of a tennis ball and had very expensive surgery. Plus apparently the fuzzy outside basically turns into sandpaper when wet and can really wear teeth down.

Aww we have an 11 week old cocker he is a menace 😀 he likes rustley toys so we have a few of those and he has a sqeaky dumbell he likes to carry and fetch. And a few chew toys.

Mrsjayy · 18/05/2023 11:04

I'm going to get him a licky mat he's not really into the Kong yet.

Riverlee · 18/05/2023 11:05

(We brought them local pet stores, not directly from Kong).

Some of it is trial and error for your particular pup. Our girl just barked at the kong gyro and the kong wobbler.

For treat dispensing toys, the ruffwear gnawt a rock was much better for her, with the added bonus is its rubber so doesn't make a racket bouncing off the skirting boards.

To be honest though, she's 2 now and from day 1 of being home an empty plastic bottle was the one of the best things ever.

Mrsjayy · 18/05/2023 11:35

Yeah I didn't buy a load of toys and his soft rustle toys come from home bargains, it's really easy to get carried away I mean mine is currently running about with a stolen sock!

Doseydots · 18/05/2023 11:42

Ah thank you. She does seem to love my slippers more than anything else. I will take a look at all of these ideas and also retrieve a plastic bottle from recycling.

@Mrsjayy why are stolen socks the holy grail of toys?!

I’ve read that apparently even when they’re clean they still smell like you to your dog and that’s why they like them. So I think it’s kind of a (gross?) compliment when your dog plays with socks or underwear 🤣

Yes it is the smell even clean ones kinda gross. My last dog liked pants🤢

Crikeyalmightey · 18/05/2023 13:46

A stuffed Kong (small) is a good idea. Our dog is 2 now, but he still has one before bed. It's like a cue, and I think it helps him settle.

Polkadotties · 18/05/2023 13:57

When my lab was a young pup she loved toys which rustled so she had lots of ducks and pheasants with rustly wings. She now can’t have any soft toys as they are destroyed in about 30 seconds 😂

Riverlee · 18/05/2023 14:59

@Polkadotties 30 seconds? That long!!
