Bleeding from rear end

Ddog is a mongrel of unknown age but he is going grey so not young.

This afternoons walk all was fine he had a poo no blood to be seen.

This evenings walk I can see he has red blood all around his anus. He didn't poo and hasn't been excessively licking the area and I cant see any pools of blood where he has been lying but there was certainly quite a bit in the hair around his bum.

He will of course be waiting outside the vets in the morning for them to open but anyone got any ideas?

I'm going and come up with everything from he is dying to he has piles.

Hi ,anal gland infection / abscess ? usually would show some discomfort .
Anal adenoma ,benign growth around anus ,can become ulcerated / infected and will bleed if so.

Oops that should say I am googling.

The strange thing is he doesnt seem bothered at all.

My girl did that..on Xmas day (of course!) She went for a poo and winced, and when we got back I noticed blood.
Rushed to her to the emergency vet (which was mostly full of dogs who'd eaten raisins etc) and it was an anal gland abscess.. needed antibiotics.

I asked the vet if her diet needed changing or anything , ..nope, they just happen sometimes. She was fine, no more signs of discomfort or anything.

Really hoping its nothing serious and also hoping he behaves himself for the vet he is a rescue and doesnt tolerate being prodded and poked.

Mine is nervous, can be reactive and HATES vets... but actually let the vet examine her. Fingers crossed for you thatit's 'just' an abscess!

Well he didn't snap at anyone which was a start. He has infected anal glands so antibiotics but luckily no cone of shame. They did say he could also do with a good teeth cleaning but this would be upwards of £500. Do you know if insurance usually covers this? We have thankfully never had to use any of out pet insurance before.

No it doesn’t usually but it’s worth doing. Having teeth out is more expensive!

Do you know if insurance usually covers this?

Mine did but there were stipulations that he must have had his teeth examined every year by the vet which he had.

I gather most policies don't cover it but you really do need to check your T&Cs closely.

Our insurance is with Direct Line ( lifetime policy ) and that covers dentals but with provisos about having them checked regularly etc .
