Flea tablets??

I have a pet plan for my dog from the vets and this time I have been given bravecto in tablet form.

I don't know why but this has thrown me a bit, it feels a bit like giving my dog something toxic if it's going to kill fleas and ticks for the next three months.

Im just looking for some reassurance that he will be fine?

Fwiw I've given it to him and he seems okay, if not a bit quieter than normal.

Of course you have to flea and worm your dog. It will get unwell if you don't. You should trust your vet to prescribe things not to harm your dog.

My 10.5 month pup has had Bravecto twice and she's been absolutely fine.

I actually asked to switch from the spot on types. Spot Ons are less convenient because they need to be used monthly, I find they stink and I can't handle my dog where it's been applied which is difficult with a puppy. I believe tablets are more effective too because you can't mess up the application and you don't have to worry about them getting wet within a few days of having it.

Wish I'd used the tablets for my last dog.

Mine used to have the spot on, but it gave him vomiting and diarrhoea. He now has the tablets and he is fine on them.

He suffered quite badly with worms when we got him, so I'm quite conscious about flea-ing and worming. And we have cats who bring bloody everything in the house - I am so pleased it's summer, I'll be having dead birds and mice. Last year I came downstairs and one of the buggers had brought in a bloody squirrel :(

Do you use any flea spray in the house? I use Indorex and I spray every 6 months, absolutely everywhere - all furniture (including beds and mattresses, duvet covers etc) and flooring.

My dog has been on bravecto tablets for a long time with no ill effects and no fleas

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/05/2023 13:14

Thanks that's all really reassuring, he's never had fleas or worms (that I've been aware of) but obviously I don't want to wait until he has got them!

He's been absolutely fine so far, I am very precious about my baby dog 😉 😂

Yy to the tablets being easier in terms of not having to constantly wash hands after touching him with the spot on treatment. Plus I'm assuming better for the environment in terms of not polluting water, streams etc?

My dog who has seizures anyway sometimes gets a flea tablet, and has never had an issue with them

OnMyWayToSenility · 18/05/2023 16:52

My dog developed seizures and paralysis from it.. for about 6 months a few years back! She's fine now but it took a while.
Obviously I don't give it to her now or milbemax wormer which has similar ingredients.

For a year, I thought I was using a combined tick/flea spot treatment for my puppy (from the vet). The groomer found 9 ticks on her last summer- some inflamed and red 😔

We've been using bravecto for 6mths now without issue- and no further ticks! From memory, the tablet is large (for my 6kg dog) so I halve is and wrap tightly in serrano ham. Hiding it in cooked chicken, ham, dog food etc doesn't work- because the meat is eaten before the tablet is flicked out 🙄

If you have Facebook, it'll be worth looking at the group does Bravetco Kill Dogs before you make a decision. There are over 50K members.

Oh God I'm not sure that would be a good thing as it would just cause more anxiety, have you got a dog? What do you use for fleas, ticks and worms?

We have two.

Some years we have used a seresto collar as if there's a reaction, you can whip it off. The Bravetco tablet stays in their system for several months and if there is a reaction, there is no antidote.

Recently we've just been using natural repellent sprays as they are now a little older and explore less so are less likely to pick them up. We live in the Highlands so ticks are prevalent here.

You could look at Simparica Trio tablets. We use it monthly for our 3 dogs. It covers fleas, ticks, and most worms, including lungworm and heartworm. It doesn't cover one of the intestinal worms, so we use a Droncit tablet every 3 months to cover this.
