What training treats do you use?

I have a tiny puppy and want easy to grab and go treats. Right now I'm using cooked chicken thighs chopped up as it's cheaper, healthy, etc. but I want something a bit easier to just keep without worrying it going off out the fridge, but can give quite a bit, especially at puppy classes, but is also small in size and a reasonable price! Something softer too, got some really hard crunchy ones that fit the criteria but they're just too hard.

What do you use?

Pates either the JR or Ancol ones. The Ancol ones in particular are quite wiffy. You can slice them up absolutely tiny too

tizwozliz · 14/05/2023 12:43

JR pate - you can cut up into cubes and then freeze and just take out what you need each day.

Vets Kitchen Little Stars are a high value treat for my dogs

Ylvamoon · 14/05/2023 13:21

I use these. They are like small tablets, non greasy, don't go off and my dogs love them!

High value - jr pate and cooked liver
Medium value - webbox sticks
Low value - wagg or schmacko type things

Youll need different levels of treats for training depending on how stimulating the environment is 🙂

Newpeep · 14/05/2023 13:32

The pate I slice into discs, freeze them flat then put in a bag and defrost as needed.

FastFood · 14/05/2023 14:00

Got a tiny puppy too. I alternate between JR pates, cooked chicken, kibbles, and the odd piece of dry liver (super high value).

He's not fussy, used to be but not anymore.

StillMedusa · 14/05/2023 14:03

Another vote for JR pate.. easy to store and use and not messy!

seratoninmoonbeams · 14/05/2023 14:46

Primula. The tiniest squeeze is enough of an incentive for our lab 😆 it's what the lady that ran our local puppy training school recommended too.

CurlewKate · 14/05/2023 15:15

My dd's dog trainer uses tiny bits of frankfurter.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 14/05/2023 16:44

JR pate
Cheap gravy bones
Normal biscuits
Cocktail sausages
Cheese
Sprats
Tuna

We alternate depending on what we're doing and so he doesn't get bored - he's a food motivated beagle and needs very high value treats in certain situations or he'll just stand there and ignore us 😂

Moanycowbag · 15/05/2023 08:28

I use Coachies, they are soft and can be broken into many pieces, chicken, cheese chopped into teeny tiny pieces and Piccolo Kibble as it's tiny pieces high meat content and puppy loves it, it's really hard with tiny puppies as I found most conventional treats far too big and that he lost focus whilst endlessly chewing on the reward.

Spanielsarepainless · 15/05/2023 10:14

Diced cheese, very upmarket kibble from usual (Fish4Dogs), friend recommended Bakers Mighty Meat dog food in a box as is slightly damp kibble. Jackpot rewards either a pouch of dog food or Primula squeeze cheese.

I use whatever I have in the house at the time but what I really want is a lickety stick . They have them in America . It's like a bottle of roll on deodorant and it comes in flavours like chicken and the like . If dog has sat on command they get a couple of licks . I can't find them here grrr .

Hellohah · 15/05/2023 12:11

I use JR products too. They are 100% meat or fish. They are quite expensive but they last for ages.

Have you seen the Arden grange page in a tube? My husband prefers this for recall training for our pup.

Newpeep · 15/05/2023 14:17

Page - paste.

Reasonistreason · 15/05/2023 18:02

Is this the lickity stick you mention? May invest in one for my ddog.

Nature's variety freeze dried food is excellent. Light, non smelly (to me), seems to massively motivate my dog. Stops my pockets smelling of sprats!

pookiedoodlepuppy · 15/05/2023 18:05

@Reasonistreason Yes that is it ! I've seen them put to use with a whole litter of pups at the same time ! Very effective . Thankyou .

pookiedoodlepuppy · 15/05/2023 21:13

@Newpeep Think I'll look these up as well ,thanks .

DimplesToadfoot · 15/05/2023 21:24

Coaches training treats.
Viovet (own brand) training treats - I break them in half when training.
Liver- bought raw and cooked on a low heat in the oven and cut into small pieces.
Boiled chicken
Tinned sausages
