Dog nappies for incontinence

Has anyone used nappies for dog bladder incontinence?

We are looking at possibly fostering to adopt a dog who has a condition that causes bladder leakage. The issue might resolve as they get older or might require surgery.

Ive seen there are washable nappies available and I’m wondering if this would be a workable solution, with regular changes obviously and a lot of care given to hygiene.

I think it would be quite distressing for a dog to wear nappies and my dog is quite good at dressing up .

There’s a lot of dog nappies on the market though so surely there’s a lot of people using them.

Really didn’t work unfortunately, and my dog was a greyhound so good at wearing clothes usually. What did work was Incurin tablets though - is she on medication for it?

OrwellianTimes · 12/05/2023 21:43

@MandyMotherOfBrian were you using for a medical issue or whilst on heat?

She had urine incontinence probably due to age. But the nappies just didn’t stay in place well enough. However she was successfully treated with Incurin - she didn’t require surgery. So I was wondering if your vet had prescribed Incurin or maybe that’s not appropriate for your dog if she definitely requires surgery.

When my boy got this problem I got dog ‘wraps’ from Amazon specifically for boy dogs with this problem. You can get boy dog or girl dog ones. Worked really well. Pretty expensive to use over a long period of time.

I can only speak for a small breed female
Dog, but we used nappies without any issues at all. Brand called simple solution, they seemed to be the easiest to get and dog a great job for us. Good luck and good on you for helping a pup going through this

Just realised you said washable! We used those too - they were ok - not AS absorbant

This is a birth defect - surgery was unsuccessful but may be repeated later on. Just started on medication but too early to know if it’s successful.

Such a beautiful dog with amazing temperament, love to give her a home I’m just trying to work out realistic expectations and what will be involved. It’s a constant dribble so poor thing needs a better solution than puppy pads.

Did you use liners? How long did they last for?

I have no experience with bitches but my male dog had incontinence due to heart issues/medication, I used washable belly bands but I found putting a Tena lady pad in them help with having no leakage and upped the absorbency and kept the skin clean and dry although I did wipe/wash and dry him twice a day so his skin didn't get irritated.

I used Glenndarcy. washable with my oldie she was mainly incontinent while in deep sleep or before she could get out in morning due to CKD but ended up wearing nappy more frequently once at palliative care stage. Glenndarcy's appear designed more with seasons in mind as own popper pad liners were suggested only for light incontinence so I tried adult incontinent pads they suggested but had leaking issues. The kidney disease causes huge wees so you may find with a steady trickle it's more successful. I used them like a wrap to keep the function bits in place. Have a look at disabled or wheelchair dog Facebook pages too as many of those are nappy wearing dogs.

Using disposable nappies as pads reduced leaks (I folded under the waist bit) with some bambino washable nappy boosters and fleece strips to wick damp, the liners were useful as i could regularly switch easily and leave nappy if that wasn't wet . Still occasionally had issues with side leakage with large wees and used human incontinence bed pads under her on the bed which meant that she didn't wake up up soaked from laying in a puddle of pee and could have breaks from nappy wearing.

These waterproof dog beds & crate mats are great as can just wipe dry quickly reasonably priced and made in UK by company that also make hospital mattresses so can enquire about different sizes/ filling etc

We managed an incontinent dog for 12 years

We used human chair protectors with vet bed on top. She was also medicated. It was very manageable once you got used to lots if washing! We had wet dog mats for the vehicles from Jacobs Den which were fantastic.

Urine burns like mad. I would not use pants on a dog. They are actually quite good at keeping themselves clean if the leakage is minor. We went for environmental control instead.

Are you in rented accommodation?

I don't think it's really very fair on any landlord to voluntarily adopt this dog.

No.
