Just looking for ideas to put in dogs kong

I used to use different things, the dog pate you get in foil pouches was a favourite for the spaniel, or dried food sealed with it. But the JRT couldn't quite get all the pate out because her tongue wasn't long enough!

I also used -
Cheese.
Carrot or apple chunks.
Treats.
Left over chicken.
Sealed with the pate - you can use peanut butter but I worried it had too much sugar in to use regularly.

I have used the spring water from a tuna can, mixed with more water and then put dried food in and frozen it for hot days - kept them busy for a while!

doodleygirl · 10/05/2023 20:01

I use tuna paste that is for humans, squeezy cheese, wet dog food, gravy and veg from a roast, as you can imagine this is her favourite!

Unbridezilla · 10/05/2023 20:02

We have one with a smaller hole that kibble goes in. For a "licky" option, peanut butter (make sure it's dog safe eg no palm oil). You can also freeze them to make it last longer

LunaNorth · 10/05/2023 20:02

Peanut butter - just make sure it has no xylitol in it.

gettingolderbutcooler · 10/05/2023 20:10

Initially thought from title that it should be in the sex threads. 🤣

Luckycat1 · 10/05/2023 20:12

I keep meaning to order a kong. Can I please jump on this thread to ask how to pick the correct size? I don't really understand how they work, are they only supposed to get their tongue in, or snout too? My 5 month pup is collie sized right now, would you go medium or large?

What do you put on your kong?
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 10/05/2023 20:14

What a beautiful dog. You could use either really. If you can afford it get both, why not :). Most dogs love them. Mine sadly can't use them as he wears them down v quick and eats the rubber.

Munchyseeds2 · 10/05/2023 20:26

Mashed up hard boiled egg mixed with some wet dog food works well

Maverickess · 10/05/2023 20:34

@Luckycat1

My JRT and Spaniel both have the medium and it works well for both of them, so I'd say medium - but the Kongs predated the spaniel so I'd probably order her a large if I were going to get her one just because of how much they hold and keep them going for.

Simonjt · 10/05/2023 20:35

Baby food pouches, usually the fruit ones (to avoid onion/garlic) with some dog biscuits mixed in.

getafringenotbotox · 10/05/2023 20:35

Chicken paste, cheese, Philadelphia, ham, chicken, anything I think they will like really.

magicstar1 · 10/05/2023 20:47

Greek yoghurt….it freezes well and I put a few treats in.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 10/05/2023 20:49

Scrambled egg
Cottage cheese low in fat ,low salt , high in calcium .

woodswoodswoods · 10/05/2023 20:52

Love all these ideas I will definitely give them a try, apart from peanut butter for some reason he doesn't like it. When freezing how long do you freeze it for ?

Thank you @Wavescrashingonthebeach and @Maverickess :)

RachyKF · 10/05/2023 21:01

I usually mix my own paste up using whatever I know my dog likes. I normally use peanut butter (dog safe), wet food or dog biscuits soaked in hot water then cooled. I add peas, chopped carrots, shredded chicken or turkey, mashed blueberries, a little bit of cheese or tuna… mix it all up to a paste and stuff it in.
For a very rare treat, I smear the tiniest bit of marmite on the outside and almost rub it in. I do worry as it’s very salty, but it’s such a strong flavour, it keeps them busy for ages.

Riverlee · 10/05/2023 21:32

We put in cheese, carrot, dog peanut button.

Sometimes the kong gets put into the freezer for several hours, sometimes ten or fifteen minutes (I know it won’t freeze but at least it will be colder).

@Luckycat1 i think the general rule of thumb is that it should be bigger than the mouth. If in doubt, Size up. You can always get a smaller one if it’s too big.

RiverPup loves his, and chews it, throws it around, licks whatever is in the hole.

FastFood · 10/05/2023 21:59

I mix peanut butter and greek yogurt. Looks quite delicious actually.

ScottBakula · 10/05/2023 22:02

Meat paste ( human type)
Peanut butter
Any left over meat and veg from the Sunday dinner
To be honest , anything your dog likes will be fine , I only froze them in the hot weather , then I'd stick them in the freezer the night before.

Size wise, @Luckycat1 your dog only needs to get its tongue in , don't get the small kong (unless you have a toy kind of size dog) just incase your pup gets it stuck in their throat.
I had a lab x staff ( more lab size than staff ) he had a medium and a large one.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/05/2023 22:14

If you're going to freeze them, please make sure you put a straw through the centre to prevent your dogs' tongue getting stuck inside. Just remove the straw when you take it out of the freezer again!

Triflenot · 10/05/2023 23:46

Eeek! I’d read about freezing Kongs, but not heard that their tongues could get stuck!

Yeah, the holes at both ends of the Kong are there for a reason - not just to make it easier for stuffing!

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 11/05/2023 06:33

Peanut butter or cream cheese

We do this as well! I always have one in the freezer on standby for when he needs distracting.
