Any ideas… 10 year old dog suddenly peeing on the carpet!

Hello,
my 10 year old female (spayed) jack russell has suddenly started peeing on the carpet. She has never really had accidents in the house so this is completely out of character for her.
She has had her fair share of health problems in the past but she has been in the best health ever for the past couple of months. She has cataracts in both of her eyes and is almost completely blind, her first accident on the carpet was when she snuck upstairs, which I thought may have been because she was scared to come back down the stairs. However she peed on the rug in my lounge last week too. She doesn’t pee on the wooden floor or kitchen lino so unsure why it would just be on the carpets!
any ideas? Much appreciated

You need a vet to do blood tests etc… however I sincerely hope it’s hormonal incontinence, our elderly Boxer has it and she was getting up and leaving damp patches underneath her and she had no idea. One blood test and she was prescribed oestrogen tablets, we had to experiment to find the lowest dose that worked for her ( tablets can cause issues with bone density) and the problem stopped literally overnight. Half a tablet every evening and no more following her round with the carpet washer. She didn’t know she was doing it and would give me dirty looks like ‘ erm why is there pee on the floor, it’s not acceptable you know!’. Evidently it’s common in older desexed dogs.

I really hope it’s this but the only solution is the vets and tests.

When I say I sincerely hope it’s hormonal incontinence I mean this because it’s simple to detect and treat, just re read my post and saw it could be misinterpreted! Good luck.

My old girl peed indoors for the first time ever when she was about 10.

It turned out she had complex problems and in hindsight I think the peeing indoors was just because she was in pain and it wasn’t able to get outdoors in time.

So as you say this is unusual you probably need to get her to the vets.

Itll be a vet visit, call first and see if you need a pee sample.
Could be hormonal or infection or many other things.

Newuser82 · 10/05/2023 20:00

Definitely a vet visit. Hopefully just a cystitis or urine infection or something.

It could be the early signs of kidney failure, my dogs first signs were increased thirst and bladder leaks, not actually peeing in the house if that makes sense, but happening in her sleep.

10 years old and suddenly peeing indoors means there’s a health problem. Best take your girl to the vets.

Thank you everyone.
I should have stated in my post that I do plan on taking her to the vets, I just wanted to see if anyone had had a similar experience.
Thank you again everyone 😊

Hey, how's she doing? We took our 10 year old girl in last week after she had 8 accidents in the house on Wednesday (more than she's ever done in her entire life!) and they've confirmed via a blood test and urine test on Thursday that she's got diabetes, glucose is really high. She started insulin injections (twice a day) on Friday. I am not a vet but one of the side effects of diabetes is cataracts/blindness so definitely would get a blood test done asap. Really hope she's okay 🐾 x

I can’t have a rug as my completely house trained dog will wee on it. I’m assuming it feels like grass.

Lonelymama88 · 14/05/2023 14:38

Hi,
I spoke with the Vet on Friday and as it isn’t happening everyday they aren’t overly concerned, we jus have to keep an eye on how much she is drinking and if the accidents increase in frequency. She seems to be fine in herself so hoping it’s nothing 😊

Our older spayed bitch had a similar problem, peeing in her sleep. It was a hormone problem, totally fixed with HRT prescribed by the vet.
