Dogs not eaten in 3 days should I give her some raw?

Re homed a cocker spaniel on Saturday. She came with purina but will not even look at it. We're on day 3 and she's not eaten a thing. I was preparing my other dogs raw this morning and she seemed keen to try it so I gave her a taste and she gobbled it up. She's done one pop since she's been here and it looked runny with worms in it so I've ordered her a wormer which is coming today. Should I put her on a raw diet? Trouble is I don't know if she's allergic to certain meats. My other dog can't eat poultry so there's only fish, pork, tripe and beef here.

Ask the vet?

instead of raw can you do cooked meat like chicken and rice or just scrambled eggs? That’s what my vet says to give when my dogs off his food or had a bad stomach.

morelippy · 09/05/2023 10:53

Def needs a vet check but then scrambled egg, bits of cooked chicken, rice or pasta.

Stratocumulus · 09/05/2023 10:56

Dogs don’t eat every day in the wild.
If she enjoyed the raw, give her a little bit of that but apparently it needs to be introduced slowly.

Try cooked chicken and rice for a few days.

Get her thoroughly wormed asap. Keep checking her poop. Being full of worms must be so debilitating. Poor dog.

Meant to say I've registered her at the vets but they can't see her until next week.

Definitely chicken and rice. My vet always said that 3-4 days was OK for not eating but more than that and I think you should call the vet again and ask for an urgent appointment.

CosmosQueen · 09/05/2023 11:02

If she has visible worms the she must be feeling lousy.
Vet first, try her with scrambled eggs or rice and chicken.
Is she drinking?

AutumnDragon · 09/05/2023 11:03

We swapped straight to raw with ours - we were told mixed feeding would upset them more as food is digested at different rates.

I would say that if she is keen to try raw, then do so.

shadowchancesassy · 09/05/2023 11:05

Thank you everyone.

@CosmosQueen she's drinking fine. I know poor thing feel awful for her. She's in season too so that could be why she's not eating so well either.

@AutumnDragon yeah we swapped straight to raw with our other dog too for those reasons. He had no problems with the swap and tbh i know it's a bit more faff but the benefits are so much better.

I always thought with raw you could just do a straight swap?

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/05/2023 11:21

We do mixed feeding with our rescue. He has bakers complete which he grazes on throughout the day and gets raw mince, chicken or lamb in the evening. He also has furry lamb or rabbit ears too once a week as they are a natural wormer.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/05/2023 11:39

I would just put her straight onto raw if she's enjoying it 🤷‍♀️

My lab didn't eat very well in season; very picky, off a lot of her favourite things and largely wanted to be left alone. Even more tricky with your girl being in a new environment.

I'd personally do a straight swap to raw on the proviso that you're mindful that she might have an upset stomach due to her season and or the change of food, so try to not do too many more changes until you've at least seen the vet.

Best of luck, hope she perks up soon and starts enjoying her new home with you guys.

shadowchancesassy · 09/05/2023 12:07

@LostInSpaceRaiders thank you my main priority atm is getting this wormer in her and getting her to eat something so will do the straight swap to raw. Once she's seen the vet and had the once over I'll ask about her being spayed. Bless her it's been a big change for her she doesn't like being alone and wants to be touching you all the time even if it's just her snout resting on your foot 😢

Hope she enjoys the raw food and she feels better soon. If she shows signs of not tolerating raw right now then cooked food such as scrambled eggs, sweet potato with fish, chicken or minced beef with rice might be easier for her to digest and then you can try raw again when she's better. Best of luck with the new addition to your family!

shadowchancesassy · 09/05/2023 19:11

@Alittlestar thank you she seems to be doing ok, gave her some after I posted this then some more for her tea. No obvious signs of allergy to the beef and she ate it like she hasn't eaten for 3 days Grin bless her. We've also had a thunderstorm today and she seemed unbothered so win win today.

Ah, that's good news, so glad to read that she's eating ( and not afraid of thunder!)

Poor little thing, so much going on all at once - in season, worms, new environment and people, it's no wonder she's a bit clingy. She's lucky to have you. Hoping she's feeling even better today.
