Staffy or Rottweiler?

I'm looking at getting a puppy. I have a staffy already so it seems logical to go for another staffy but I do have my heart set on a Rottweiler. Does anyone have experience of both that can give opinions?

I have both and adore them both - more rottie is very laid back xx

Not much experience of a staffy apart from a friends which is high energy, a bit nuts as a puppy but incredibly sweet and affectionate.

I’ve had a few Rottweilers … lovely dogs but can be stubborn (and a bit thick!), more laid back than a staffy

@spring78 would you say a Rottweiler is harder to train than a staff?

My staff is lovely, chilled but bloody simple!

Rottie 100%. I've been in love with them ever since I went missing at a horse yard when I was 2 only to be found inside the guard dogs kennel brushing his teeth with an old toothbrush I found. The most sweet and gentle breed I've ever known.

Definitely Rottie - they're lovely dogs with fantastic temperaments.

Adopt don’t shop

Cluckycluck · 08/05/2023 19:03

@almostoverthehill As much as I would like to I can't. Unfortunately, there are very few dogs that become available that are able to live with dogs, cats, children and a variety of other animals and that are a breed that is suitable for my lifestyle and to be a family pet.

Rotties are easier to train than staffies in some ways, they pick up commands almost instantly, like literally you can teach them a trick from scratch in minutes.

But, they’re hard to train to stop doing something, if it’s self rewarding they’ll just carry on doing it despite knowing full well what you’re asking from them.

I stopped looking for another one a few years ago, I couldn’t find a breeder that did enough health testing within travelling distance and having dealt with elbow dysplasia, I’m not willing to go through that again.

I’m actually waiting on a rescue deciding if they want to home check me for a dog and cat friendly one... I’m not telling you where though in case you apply for it 😂 so they do come up, just not often.

I love Rotties, I would definitely choose one if I was to get another dog.

MonumentalLentil · 08/05/2023 19:30

I love Staffies.
However the rescue dog I wanted was a cross between the two, big, clumsy, soft, cuddly and thought he was a lap dog. Gorgeous boy. Would still choose a Staffie.

I have got 3 rotties, and they are fantastic dogs. Very loving and very trainable. They will find their own entertainment if you don’t give them enough to do though!
Do make sure you see the parents health tests- hip/elbow scores, JLPP, LEMP etc. If you look at Laboklin Rottweiler bundle, it will give you an idea of the health tests that most reputable breeders do, as well as giving information about the particular conditions.

If you look up Pat and Karen Lucas on Champdogs, they are mother and daughter who show, breed and health test Rotties. They're in Bradford. Stunning dogs.

Sorry meant to say Kennel name is Coltrana.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 09/05/2023 08:54

Staffie 😁 although I do love Rotties too, just never had one.

shadowchancesassy · 09/05/2023 10:54

Ooo I couldn't decide I love them both. Leaning more towards rotty though just because they are sooo cute as pups

Newpeep · 09/05/2023 11:23

Rotties are gorgeous dogs if well bred and socialised. Much more laid back than staffies and don't quite have the same terrier impulses. I always said if space was no object a rottie would definitely be on the list of wants.
