Yorkie cross

I'm still searching for a rescue dog for our family (much harder than you'd expect in my area). I've spotted a young Yorkie cross. Can any Yorkie owners let me know if their dog can manage for example a day out walking /picnic, maybe 6 miles or so? Just thinking how they would fit in with our lifestyle. We want a walking companion.

I'm used to border collies, so it would be quite a change 😂

I would think as long as you worked up to that distance it would be fine. Yorkies as were bred as working dogs, not lap dogs. What's the other half of the cross? And they vary a lot in size - I know one almost as big as a working cocker.

What about one of these op?

Thankyou! That's what I thought. I think there are lots of small dogs that are hardier than people think or allow them to be. I suppose with a small dog you can always carry them if they start to struggle? It looks about Westie sized - doesn't state what it is crossed with. I'll have to decide and move fast or he'll disappear.

I bought a Yorkie X Westie years ago, he was extremely active until he got to 14 when illness affected him. Could easily have walked 6 miles but I suppose it depends on the nature of the individual dog. At least if your potential dog isn't a puppy you'll be able to see how energetic he is.

Don't know if your potential dog is similar but ours looks like a Cairn terrier, so that's what we say he is now. He's an extremely loyal, brave and empathetic dog who lived for his walks.

That's hilarious! Good idea for emergency use though, thankyou

I've got a yorkie x and he can walk for miles or is happy with a potter around the block.

We have a rescue yorkie who hadn't had much exercise in his previous home. We just built up slowly and now he'd be able to manage a walk like that (sometimes a short carry at the end if he gets worn out!) Because they have hair and not fur, you just have to be a bit careful that they don't get too wet and/or cold 😊.

Newpeep · 08/05/2023 17:14

It’s a terrier 😉 Fit, game, active little dogs who rarely fulfil their potential IME as people assume they’re lap dogs.

Go for it. I know quite a few who compete in agility.

FabFitFifties · 08/05/2023 17:43

OK, thankyou everyone, I'm working quickly on DP.

I walk a Yorkie mix who could happily go all day IF the weather is good.

But he really does feel the cold and doesn't enjoy being out for long periods in cold, wet or windy weather - so you may need to get him a coat to wear on long trips, especially if they'll involve lunches out or sitting around :)

Plant2628 · 08/05/2023 20:19

Need an Equafleece as they feel the cold. Mine is a cross and can walk miles. Rescue might give you an idea, depending on history available. Equally mine can miss a walk and you don't notice.

Plant2628 · 08/05/2023 20:19

Check temperament as some are a bit too fiesty.

That’s often due to the way they are kept IME. They’re working dogs. Very bright. Quite active. They need training, mental work and boundaries ie, to be taught what you’d like them to do. And like all terriers bring lone workers don’t tend to be social butterflies. They tolerate rather than enjoy other dogs.

That's awful and extremely bad for the dog's spine.

tothetower · 09/05/2023 14:04

My yorkie could walk that, but would rather not 🤣

Sheepsheepeverywhere · 09/05/2023 14:22

Photo was a joke people...

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/05/2023 20:23

Terriers are energetic, robust dogs.

They'll easily walk 6 miles.
