Dog shoes for Springer?

I've seen some negative opinions about shoes to try and protect the pads of dogs - who had them or had tried them and what are your thoughts? My Springer is 7 - I walk a hell of a lot - I take her away on my campervan and our daily walks can be 4-5hrs - asking rural footpaths, across styles, etc but on some occasions, even though I think the ground is relatively soft (muddy, grassy) there are times when her pads have a layer of skin hanging off. She doesn't have any sense and would just keep going - I end up putting her on a lead to save her from herself and then, of her pads are damaged, we have rest days which usually messes up my holiday/time away in the van. If I walk 100m she zig zags around and covers 500m maybe even 800m so on my 10-15 mile walks she might be covering 50-100 miles - an incredible thought. I know there are walks in the peak District where there is a lot of limestone that I need to limit what she does - either I put her on the lead or simply walk less. Are any kind of dog shoes going to help her at all or will the uncertainty underfoot cause more problems for her? She was trained as gun dog so there's nothing I have been able to do to stop her from continuously searching left and then right - short of keeping her on a lead most of the time.

Hello! It definitely sounds like boots will help your dog.

Different situation but when my dog became elderly and arthritic, she started dragging her paws, which caused them to bleed. We started out using boots found on Amazon which were crap and turned into a false economy. Forked out a little more for ruffwear dog boots. After taking her a little time to adjust they worked brilliantly and really helped lessen the discomfort. No more bleeding or sores.

More recently we have been looking at orthopaedic dog boots for my more active dog who has a toe issue. We are planning on ordering these as I think they might be better for a more active dog but cannot vouch for them first hand. There is a winter and summer version.

My working scent dogs are all used to wearing boots - sometimes for grip, sometimes to protect their feet eg dodgy chemicals on the ground or when working on very rough terrain.

We get our custom made(!) but ruffwear are good strong shoes.

You may find that using Pawz disposable dog shoes first that it is easier for them to get used to the boots. These are really lightweight and mould on the dogs feet.

PawZ Disposable Dog Boots Black

Black PawZ dog boots are made from natural rubber and are 100% biodegradable. Waterproof, reusable and disposable. Uses are dogs with sensitive pads, recovering from injury or operations or dogs that have allergies.

We’ve used Pawz on our springer when he had a nasty cut on his pad - they were the only ones to stay on for a decent walk

Thanks everyone this is really helpful to hear. I'm going to order both types... As if she isn't costing me enough money already! What the heck... In for a penny - in for a pound.

On my cocker I’ve tried a number of shoes, but he just drags them or is very clumsy. A lot of them are poor quality, or can’t manage to bend at the ankle and just work their way down.
The only ones that don’t affect him and stay on properly are the Pawz.
