Two bitches both in season

Both my girls are in season atm, both usually get on very well but ones become snappy with the other. Is it hormones? Having to keep them apart atm because the snappy one went for the other twice.

Yes def hormones! They’re vying for the hot male dogs to come to them and give them pups so they will get snappy with each other.

Best thing to do is separate entirely for the next few weeks until they’re both done (at home and walk and feed separately)

Then get them spayed once they’re of age. If you don’t know how to handle two bitches in heat you certainly do not know how to handle puppies! And I mean this kindly but please don’t inflict that on your lovely dogs.

I've had puppy's in the past so know how to handle puppy's thanks. I just asked a simple question didnt need a lecture on spaying.

Well as you clearly have no idea how to cope with two dogs in season I’d say at least one of them should be spayed and you should be lectured.

shadowchancesassy · 06/05/2023 23:28

I asked because I've never had two females. And I am coping thanks, like I said in the op I've separated them.

If you’re coping and you’ve separated them then what’s the problem?

Or has one of your dogs gone for the other, and you’re currently trying to back track so that you seem more knowledgeable?

don't be so proud your one of your dogs ends up injured.

justgettingthroughtheday · 06/05/2023 23:56

Ffs @Ostryga why be so horrid?
The OP has asked a simple question no need to jump on them and impose your views! Having two bitches in season together isn't all that normal.

@shadowchancesassy it probably is hormones and a bit of confusion and anxiety. They will not be be feeling odd. I'd just keep them separate and keep everything really calm for a bit until they are back to normal.

shadowchancesassy · 07/05/2023 08:20

@Ostryga are you always this rude? You clearly can't read because I said in my op that one had gone for the other so I've had to separate them.

@justgettingthroughtheday thank you. They get on like best friends normally so put it down to hormones but just wanted some clarity because like I've said I've never had two butches before.

It’s hormones.

But tbh it’s also not uncommon if there is more than one bitch in the house for them to come into season at the same time so this is likely to be the norm from now on.

I would suggest you have them both spayed once they’ve come through their season.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 07/05/2023 08:34

Not sure why PP felt the need to be so unpleasant.

Anyway - yes, it is totally normal and you're doing the right thing by keeping them separated. Obviously going forward they'll need spaying but I believe it's a certain amount of time after the season has finished before they can go for surgery.

You may also want to spay one and let her recover fully before doing the other, just so
you don't have to deal with two dogs recovering from surgery at the same time.

EdithStourton · 07/05/2023 08:58

Also before you spay them check out the optimum age for their breed. In general larger dogs are better off health-wise if neutered later; it's not such an issue with smaller ones.
