Dry food hole in bag

Hi lovely peeps

My dry dog food arrived today with a decent size (£2 coin) hole in it that had been taped up. I contacted the company and they are sending a replacement. Cool.

Would you use it? I suspect it happened as it was being boxed up for delivery. No, I can't use it, it could all be stale (does kibble go stale?). I can't face the thought of lifting the 20kg bag into the bin to be honest.

Kibble does go stale but I don't think it will do any harm, from what I have read it just doesn't taste good. I would use it tbh unless the dog refuses to eat it

I think I would probably donate to the food bank or a rescue centre. Nutritionally it will be fine and it would be better than a dog in a household that uses the food bank not having any food, or a rescue centre could add gravy to it maybe?

Yes, dry dog food goes stale, just like human food goes stale once opened. Loads of people buy these huge bags of kibble to make a saving and forget that once opened, any food eventually goes off.

It was very bad of them to tape it up and sell it.

I would just use it - wouldn't occur to me to even ask for a replacement 😳

Floralnomad · 05/05/2023 10:54

My concern with a hole of that size would be that a rodent had been in , mice can get through tiny holes . I would bin it .

Spanielsarepainless · 05/05/2023 11:06

Just use it. I wouldn't have even bothered mentioning it. The rubbish the average dog snaffles on a country walk, a bit of rodent damage or detritus wouldn't affect them.

I mean, considering all the crap my dog picks up on walks, a rodent having eaten some of his food is the least of my worries tbh 😂

Why should her dog eat potentially stale or spoiled food? The retailer was in the wrong and she was 100% right to get a replacement.

Floralnomad · 05/05/2023 12:57

Maybe I look at it differently because my dog doesn’t eat crap that he finds he may have a chomp at some plants if we stand still too long but he doesn’t eat poo / crap off the ground .

FishChipsMushyPeas · 05/05/2023 13:35

Thanks for the replies all, my dog is rather, well, sensitive and if there is mouse poop etc in the bag I could do without having to clean up the outcome (had mice in the garage in the past so I speak from experience). He doesn't eat much when out for a walk. Doesn't even sniff much. He's a strange one.

I'm a bit embarrassed that people think I shouldn't have asked for it to be replaced although the company was horrified it had actually been sent out like that.

I'm not saying she shouldn't have got a replacement - just that it would never occur to me to do so 🤷‍♀️
