Can anyone please recommend a dog food for a senior dog with recently developed gastrointestinal issues?

No history of gastro issues.
Checked over at vet.
Very loose stools for past six months.
No longer tolerating her normal food.
Health, weight, appetite all normal.

12 year old springer spaniel.

Thanks in advance.

How checked over has the dog been at the vet?

What test have been carried out?

Justbekind2yourself · 04/05/2023 21:11

She has had a thorough physical examination and urine tested. They weren’t overly concerned as otherwise she is fit and well.

Not sure if you are sorted yet but we moved our dog onto butternut box, she has many allergies and has had many issues with foods, she’s been on so many different foods since, it’s expensive but so worth it. It’s fresh food cooked then frozen. If you wanted to give it a go then I can share a 50% off code

My DSis' DDog was exactly the same and the Vet recommended Chappie. Tins not the dried and he was great on it.

My dog turned out to be sensitive to chicken and is now on a salmon and rice kibble. I also give him Yumove probiotic tablets and Protexin fibre pellets and his poo is the best it's ever been.

One of mine has colitis.
Single source protein and grain free works for us.
Currently he’s on wainwrights sensitive salmon kibble ans nature diet purely salmon.

We have a 12 year old springer who for her whole life has had severe ibs. Tried everything. We switched her food about 5 years ago to field and trial hypoallergenic & it's been a lifesaver! Couldn't recommend highly enough.

Apologies if this is the wrong place, this morning I've found rubber like stones in my dogs poo. Last week he was at the vets and was given a paste to help digestive function as he's pooing routine hasn't been his normal.... could this be due to the paste or something else and needs to go back to the vets? Thank you and sorry if tmi

Try adding tree barks to her food. And clay products or mud. I mean supplements not from the garden obviously!
Stoolrite is also good as is psyllium husks.

My dog's poo is a delight now (if you're dog has struggled with digestive issues, you'll know what I mean!)

Tinned Chappie is surprisingly good, don’t dismiss it just as it’s cheap. My old lady with lifelong IBD could tolerate that when other things failed. Be very wary of the often recommended chicken & rice bland diet, chicken was a no no for her & one of my young ones who has no issues normally gets diarrhoea on chicken.
I always keep a tube of probiotic paste in stock for flare ups. VetUK do their own version, buy online, that is the same but far cheaper than Promax from the vet.

Chappie contains chicken...

When our 12 year old greyhound had digestive issues the vet suggested 'Royal Canin'. He'd had a day of severe diarrhea and sickness and turned out to be very dehydrated. Never got to the bottom of the issue, but the Royal Canin is very gentle on the stomach. @Justbekind2yourself > Hope your boy feels better soon.

Given that they’re senior and it’s only come on in later years, I would strongly, strongly recommend getting your dog blood tested to be sure there isn’t anything else going on.

What has your vet suggested? Why don’t you try boiled chicken and vegetables for a little while - ease them into new food slowly.
