My beautiful baby is being PTS today after being diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago. He was 8 weeks and my Dd 18 months so they have grown up together. He sleeps with her etc. She is now nearly 12 and adament she wants to come to the vets.

I don't know what to do, part of me thinks no it will be too much, the other says yes as shes so distraught and wants to be with him til the end.

Give me the brutal opinions, my head is all over the place. DDog is my shadow and my heart is being ripped out so I know I'm not thinking rationally.

You did the right thing letting her be there. She now knows she did the best thing by her boy and she comforted him in his final moments. That will help her grieve. My thoughts are with you all, I still miss my dog who was pts 8 years ago but it gives me comfort to know his last moments were peaceful and with me.

Well done OP, glad it was peaceful and quick. Sorry for your loss.

Just wanted to say something for parents who might read this thread making similar considerations: please explain to your child beforehand about post-mortem expulsion of air. I witnessed this when a childhood dog was PTS, very well and peacefully, but I was so troubled by the air being released from the body afterwards - I think I knew rationally what had happened, but some part of me believed it meant the dog was still 'alive', somehow. It can be quite confusing for a child if they've never seen it before.

So sorry for your loss OP. We had our old boy pts at home Friday.

We had offered our children to be present but they wanted to wait upstairs. I'm glad they did as he reacted badly to the sedation and it made him anxious and his body fought it. The whole process ended up taking 45 minutes. So just in case someone reads this and have sensitive children you need to be aware there are no guarantees that it will be calm and peaceful.

100% let her. But have someone else there in case she changes her mind left minute. I had one teen daughter who came in and one who waited outside.

my one who came in was heartbroken but needed to be there.

Only just seen this so I know your dog has now passed. I hope it went as well as it could have. Was your DD there?
I was a bit older than her when our family dog had to be PTS, he was 17 so had been around all of my life. We had the same kind of relationship that you describe of your daughter and dog. He too was a big dog. The vet came to our house and he's buried in my parents garden. I was there and I'm glad that I was, to say goodbye. It was quick thankfully. I hope it was for your dog too x

Sorry, I've just read that he fell asleep on your daughter. I'm sure she is glad that she was there and appreciates you allowing her to.
I had to have one of our cats PTS a few years ago. My daughter didn't want to come to the vets but my son did. He was 13. He changed his mind when we were there so he waited in the waiting room.

@Ridingthegravytrain very sorry for your loss x

Just to add... I wouldn't have a child there when you have to have your horse PTS as it's harrowing. My friend had warned me before so I didn't let my teenage children come. She was 32 and had a good life but the process wasn't peaceful so I'm glad my two weren't there to see it.

I’ve had 3 horses and a Shetland pony PTS and they’ve all been pretty peaceful and certainly not distressing .

Let her be with her pet. She is being a good and loving owner in seeing him through to the end. She Won't see anything horrible and her presence will comfort her little friend.
