In an ideal world, how many dogs would you have?

Assuming money no object, huge garden and house etc.

I think I'd be tempted to rescue loads but then I'd wonder if they each had enough individual attention and whether I'd have enough time for training. I'm thinking no more than six.

I currently have 2, with occasional visitors for overnights if family members need help. I have decided 2 is the right number for me - we can cuddle up, they are company for each other, the smells and hair are not too overpowering.
That said, I would love to have a business providing care, respite, kennels whatever to all the dogs. But only if my 2 liked them.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 02/05/2023 19:40

I have 2 and I think two is perfect. I’d struggle to walk more (picking up poo while holding 3/4/5 dogs with one hand…), don’t take up too much space, keep each other company, don’t cost too much to feed. I actually find having two easier than having 1 but I think that I’d find more very hard work

Theredjellybean · 02/05/2023 19:54

All of them...I'd literally empty the rescue centres..but I get the point about attention and training etc.
I have three ddogs at the moment. Walking them is tricky on my own and they are generally good bois..one is nervy.
I'm.not sure how I ended up with ddog 3...2 is ideal

SirChenjins · 02/05/2023 19:56

If money was no object, I didn’t work and I had a huge house and garden then 3 or 4 (but I’d probably end up taking more)

LuckOfTheDrawer · 02/05/2023 19:56

One dog.

FlowersAndDogs · 02/05/2023 19:58

All the dogs!

We have 4 currently, but we foster as well so you never know. 😬 We can definitely fit more into our lives and home.

twistyizzy · 02/05/2023 19:58
  1. All spaniels. In my massive farmhouse kitchen. All at various stages in their training.
I aim to be the mad dog/horse woman living on my own with my menagerie. I have indeed thought this through at length.
SirChenjins · 02/05/2023 20:02

I’d have my current cockapoo, a border terrier, a retriever and a cairn terrier. A few sheep, a couple of goats, some hens, an donkey and a cow and I’d be a very happy lady.

ToHellBackAndBeyond · 02/05/2023 20:03

Just one. I currently have nine. I'd love just to have one. At one point I had fourteen. They take a lot of time for walking, feeding, grooming, vets, laying by the fire, individual fussing, but all are loved and well cared for.

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/05/2023 20:04

We've got six - that's a good number.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/05/2023 20:04

Does anyone follow The Asher House (YouTube, Facebook, etc)? He's got a sanctuary in Oregon with about 40 dogs. I can spend hours watching him.

TomatoSandwiches · 02/05/2023 20:05

1 male Italian greyhound 1 female King spaniel, 3 maine coon cats and a pond filled with frogs and fish.

JaimeLannister · 02/05/2023 20:13

Two I think. I'd love the idea of more but realistically I think two is the number I could care for how they deserve with training, walking, grooming etc.

Plus any more and I couldn't get in my bed!

ScattyHattie · 02/05/2023 21:40

I'd probably start with about 6 greyhounds as they're dead easy to have around in a group maybe some other sighthounds with a staffy mix for cuddles, all rescues.

If have lots of land it's easy for them to get exercise together so can just pick one or 2 to take out places for practicality. I've had 4 at one stage which didn't feel too many at time and walked 3 together on my own, the 4th was a dickdog. If have money then can pay other people to care for them to give yourself some rest & freedom.

My friend had 9 dogs in fairly normal house & garden, a couple were little terriers that needed way more exercise & stimulation than rest put together 😂so think much does depend on breed how practical it is to provide what they need.

SoloMamabyChoice · 02/05/2023 21:40

Zero.

RestingMurderousFace · 02/05/2023 21:41

Eleventy billion.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/05/2023 21:41

I've got one, would have two if we had more room. More than that sounds too much like hard work though!

Lee is extremely watchable. 😂😍

CMOTDibbler · 02/05/2023 21:45

I have two, and that is pretty perfect. Fostering one puppy makes things hard, two is just impossible to give them all the attention they deserve

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/05/2023 21:47

@RestingMurderousFace - I meant I can spend hours watching his dogs, not big hairy half naked Lee Wink

ilovesushi · 02/05/2023 21:50

If I had masses of land and big farmhouse type house with an aga in the kitchen, I'd have three or four dogs I think. I've never taken two dogs out for a walk on my own so not sure how I'd cope with that. I'd also get a pig and some sheep and hens. And two or more cats. That is pretty much my dream life!

Clymene · 02/05/2023 21:56

At least five. But I'd need a bigger bed

TillyTollyTully · 02/05/2023 23:06

We have one and we're unlikely to ever have more than one.

But if money was literally no object and we had a bigger house and garden and no jobs to do - I think we'd have 3 or 4.

Same as a pp, all spaniels!

DominoRules · 03/05/2023 12:14

I think 5 or 6, all spaniels. I only have one springer now, he’s our first dog and we’d love another one soon……. Unfortunately our house is probably only big enough for 2!
