Hi , sorry for the long post ...
Me and the dogs have about 3 walks a day , as it was the weekend we did the long walk to the farm fields where they get to have a good sniff and a big enclosed field to run ( private&have permission )
It's a easy 9000 step walk there and back and we do it maybe once a week.
My boys are patterdaleX terriers , they love walking.
Last nite ( 1am ) they had a little ruck, think they must of fought over a toy , checked they were both ok , went to bed after they'd been in garden for a wee etc.
They were really hot it was really stuffy and hot upstairs so I put the fan on and opened the windows more.
About 4 am when they were asleep I woke to a really weird howl/whine it scared me at first as thought it was a alarm/ fox outside etc
My boy was stiff as a board at bottom of bed making that noise , I gathered him up and he wet himself , he was literally zoned out completely I thought he was dying or had had a stroke/ heart attack :(
Took him downstairs he perked up , went out in the garden with me then sat in my lap , opened the garden doors so he was cool got him a drink , wet his feet and head a little to cool him down. He slept , I didn't I was checking on him as he slept ... fast forward after calling the emergency vets he seems happy and back to his usual character , took him for a tiny gentle walk round the little field , is eating , drinking , barking playing etc the vets said to keep a eye it could just of been heat stroke but I'm so so upset and scared that he had a stroke
I know we all love our dogs and worry etc , this lad is my absolute best friend
I just wondered if anyone else has had anything similar or any advice please as vet said to just keep my eye on him as he's back to his usual self
Thank you

Sounds like a seizure? I know nothing about dogs but that’s my first thought.
Can be cursed by heat. Febrile convulsions?

Smartiepants79 · 01/05/2023 22:13

Caused not cursed!

Paperbagsaremine · 01/05/2023 22:15

Well fwiw one of my dogs (who was twelve at least at the time) once vomited and then had a seizure in the middle of the night. Was a bit wobbly for a few days. Lived to 15 1/2.
I am not a vet and that is only my dog but still...

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 01/05/2023 22:17

Sounds like he may have had a fit or similar from your description of him going stiff. This may have been why the dogs had a squabble to as they will often attack others who are fitting or showing signs of illness.
you will just have to be vigilant and try to avoid him getting stressed. Try to video it if it happens again so you can show the vet. There is medication for epilepsy for dogs so if it is that it cam be treated.

@Smartiepants79 thank you that's what the vet suggested it just was so scary the actual whine he did was so long

@Paperbagsaremine thank you that is really reassuring to hear about your lovely dog

@YouveCatToBeKittenMe that's exactly what happened when he let out the noise his litter brother rushed forward quite aggressively till I picked him up
Honestly he went like a toddler when they don't want to go in the buggy , I was convinced it was a stroke even those his eyes never rolled back but I hadn't even throughly about fits so thank you all for that , never had a issue before so it's really worried me ... I've worked in kennels and around dogs since little and never seen a dog fit before

I would say a seizure too - they can be triggered by heat or tiredness sometimes.

I know it's really scary but fits are relatively common in older dogs and they don't necessarily mean anything serious! I would keep a note of when it happened and his behaviour so you can refer back to it if it happens again.

A thorough check over at the vets may be a good idea as well, just in case ☺️

foxlover47 · 01/05/2023 23:46

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts thank you :)
I am ringing first thing tomorrow for a appointment like you said for a check over and a bit of peace of mind. I'm a bit like a nervous wreck this evening Every-time he moves I'm checking on him , he and his brother have just turned 3 , he was def too hot last night

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts I'm going to write down the time and length of it too like you said @YouveCatToBeKittenMe said about videoing it if it happens again to show the vet but I'm not sure I could be skilled enough to do that I tried my best to keep calm for him but was def panicked 😢

Yes I would say seizure too. We had a
cat who used to get them and would wee every time. He was always ok afterwards too

foxlover47 · 02/05/2023 00:00

@pteradactyl ah that is also reassuring to hear , thank you :)
