5 month old pup on holiday

Would love thoughts on taking our 5 month old pup on holiday with us. We'll be driving to France and staying for a week.

So, not yet toilet trained, very happy and settled with us, is crated, but obviously this is a big change of environment. We'll be staying in a dog friendly Airbnb.

I'm wondering if she's too young to leave her home environment- will it unsettle her too much?

Also, any tips for the journey / holiday gratefully received ☺️

Do you live on the UK ? If so that's a long drive, none of my dogs have been good traveler's.

We took our beagle puppy to Scotland when he was five months old - he loved it!

It was a four-ish hour drive so we did regular stops for the toilet but he pretty much slept the whole way ☺️

If you’re in the Uk and planing to go into Europe you need to be very aware of the pet licensing requirements for travel out and back into the UK. It is very specific and you can’t be out by a day.

We took our 13 week old camping! She was fully jabbed but had only been out in the world for a week.
Long drive... she slept. Took to tent life like a pro. Loved the attention, slept like a log with all the fresh air and didn't seem to mind the total change to her life for a week.

We went away with our pup when she was 5 months old. However she was a great traveller and toilet trained. So no issues with the journey or once there.

We were also prepared to just pack up and come home if it was all too much.

If going abroad you'll also need to make sure you have a rabies vaccination 21 days in advance, then arrange an AHC and then an appointment with a vet for a wormer before you return to the UK

@Arucana @UnaLaguna good to know, thanks for the information.

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts yes I'm relying on that long nap!! We've got a longer drive but will be breaking it up often.

You might want to check with the AirBnb too. I know when we were looking there were some that wouldn't accept dogs under a certain age (sometimes 1 year, sometimes 6 months).

How are you planning to get to France? Different rules on where pup has to be depending if taking ferry or Eurotunnel. Some ferries have a pet lounge, others require pets to stay in vehicles.

polopolopolopoo · 02/05/2023 15:01

@UnaLaguna Airbnb is happy thankfully and we'll do ferry there, tunnel back so will check with both. Thanks!

Worth noting that you can’t take dog food from the UK into the EU (or any meat products) unless you have a vet note saying they need that exact food for medical reasons. And then I believe it’s 2kg of dry food maximum.

polopolopolopoo · 02/05/2023 18:55

@Frances24 oh wow I didn't know that one!! Thanks 🙏

Ours travels with us all the time. He doesn’t like the tunnel and prefers to stay in the car than in a kennel in the ferry. He loves travelling and would be very unhappy if we went on holiday without him (and he would let you know he isn’t happy).
He’s a lap dog so sleeps and cuddles most of the day anyway.

polopolopolopoo · 03/05/2023 14:12

@Newjobformoremoney ah I didn't realise they have to be kennelled on the ferry. Might have to do there and back via tunnel then. Don't fancy sitting in the car with her for the ferry ride and wouldn't want to leave her on her own at this stage.

Unfortunately you can’t stay in the car. I would tunnel it both ways then. Or get a ferry with dog friendly cabins?

UnaLaguna · 03/05/2023 15:28

Not sure what route, but I think one of the p&o ferries now has a pet lounge so pup wouldn't need to remain in the car

polopolopolopoo · 03/05/2023 16:58

@UnaLaguna ooh that's good to know, I'll look into that.
