MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach · 01/05/2023 20:15

I love a checklist so load me up in what I might’ve forgotten!

Taking dog to Italy for 5w - flying inside the cabin

what must be remembered?

thanks!

I don't fly with my dog but....
Collapsible water bowl
Something to chew on the flight
Food
A mat to lie on (I use bath mats as they offer a bit of cushioning)
Poo bags
Toys?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 01/05/2023 21:59

Make sure he's medically fit to fly and has had all the appropriate jabs and medication required.

I wouldn't feed on the plane as you don't want to deal with poo if you can help it - but fresh water is obviously a must. Maybe some food for when you arrive though.

A blanket or comfort item would be good as well as a bed inside the crate/carrier if it will fit.

Then for when you're there - food, treats if necessary as you don't want to change their diet on top of the stress of travel - also leads (and spares) collar, ID tag, all their documents, any medication, a favourite toy etc.

Post Brexit you're not allowed to take pet food into Europe. They're fairly lax about checks on ferries but not sure about flying

MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach · 02/05/2023 07:41

Oh thanks so much!

We’re travelling within the EU so will double check pet food rules but that hasn’t even occurred to me! 🙃

Great ideas, thabks

That's interesting - even dried food in the original sealed packaging?

I wonder how that works for dogs with specific allergies or dietary restrictions.

I believe you need a vets note to be able to carry any kind of dog food that contains meat stating that the dog has to eat that exact food for medical reasons, and even then I think there is a limit on how much you can take.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 02/05/2023 08:21

Thanks @Frances24 that's interesting!

Yes even dried food in sealed original packaging. With a vets letter you can take up to 2kg of prescribed food - so not much at all if wet food, even taking enough dry could be an issue if you have a large breed.

MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach · 02/05/2023 12:18

On the subject of the food, we will be travelling within Schengen states (Denmark/Italy)

Can anyone advise where I can find the official Information regarding what we can can’t bring specifically for this

thanks!

OP posts:
UnaLaguna · 02/05/2023 12:27

Within the EU it's not an issue, it's only going from the UK to the EU.

MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach · 02/05/2023 15:15

Excellent, thanks!

Poo bags, unless you know how to ask for them in Danish and Italian Grin

agadget to pull out ticks if going somewhere grassy.

Worming tablets.

Blanket that smells of home.

Maybe a collar tag with details of where you are staying.

Upholstery cleaner just in case?

Baaaaaa · 02/05/2023 19:25

And a microfibre towel

regenerista · 02/05/2023 19:26

I know someone who goes on cruises regularly and takes his dog's food with him, have never heard him mention it being a problem (maybe it's because he's on board ship, who knows)

ScottBakula · 02/05/2023 20:34

Check your dogs insurance covers different countries.

Basic pooch 1st aid kit

Something that smells of home.

MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach · 03/05/2023 06:06

Awesome, thank you!

what would you suggest goes in a 1st aid kit, we’ve (thankfully) never needed anything other than a tick remover!

We are travelling at the moment with our dog and are currently in Denmark.

Since Brexit you need an animal health certificate in the language of the country that you are entering the Schengen Area - this must be issued by a vet shortly before travel - i can't remember the exact time scale but we arrange to pick it up 48 hours before travel - the dig must have a rabies jab so allow time for that if your dog needs one

The certificate costs between £100 & £180 depending on vet. It is only valid for one trip

We use Lidl food while we are away (but do take her dried food illegally) however we don't fly

Also to return to UK you need to see an EU vet who checks animal and administers a worming tablet. This needs to be within 7 (check this as it may be 5). days of departure

Our dog loves travelling - have fun

grannycake · 03/05/2023 06:25

Also some places have free poo bags. Was common in Brittany last year and I have seen them here in Denmark. They are normally by the poo bins but yes take plenty with you though they are available in supermarkets

Here's a pic of my dog enjoying Netherlands 10 days ago

ScottBakula · 03/05/2023 06:26

A quick look on amazon shows them ( one is out of stock ) they will give you a idea .
Have a chat with your vet too see what they recommend

grannycake · 03/05/2023 06:26

Sorry it's not posted

ScottBakula · 03/05/2023 06:28

Hmm for some reason I can't post any links , but have a look on Amazon

MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach · 03/05/2023 14:27

Great, thank you!
