Dog we are dogsitting for has eaten a load of sheep poo - help!

Went out for a walk early afternoon with him and he took a big fancy to sheep shit. Only the fresh stuff naturally 🙄.

Of course we've just let him out for final toilet before bed and unsurprisingly he has an upset tum. Not quite the shits but two massive mounds of soft stuff that looks like sheep poo.

Should we be worried? Do we need to contact a vet? He's fine in himself, ate his dinner, been playing and napping before bed as usual.

I feel so bad. Thanks

Chances are he will be fine.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/04/2023 21:54

My dog eats lots of sheep poo, not a problem.
what kind of dog is it?

marleyandme · 30/04/2023 21:55

It's unlikely to be the first time he's done it! I'd try not to worry, my two pick up all sorts on walks and aside from keeping them on a lead and calling them away as soon as you notice there isn't much you can do.
If the dog seems fine in themselves, just having slightly softer poos isn't a cause for concern. I'd keep an eye on them and see how they do overnight and in the morning - and try to prevent them from doing it again tomorrow! But don't sweat it 😂

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/04/2023 21:55

Also if he ate his dinner v likely he’s fine

BungalowLil · 30/04/2023 21:57

This is a pretty common thing. My dog will do it given any chance. There systems seem designed to reject anything grim hence the heaps of soft poo. Don't worry about it, especially as the dog seems otherwise fine.

He's a (ginormous!) lab.

It's pretty much digested grass. My dog eats it and it fine. He used to hang around the guinea pig cage hoping for a treat too. Gross and don't let him lick your face, but he should be ok.

Sheepareawesome · 30/04/2023 22:00

Sounds like my spaniels! They love sheep poo, deer poo, cat poo, horse poo, rabbit poo and cow poo. Disgusting! Especially when they try and kiss me afterwards...!

It doesn't seem to do any harm, although they get runny green poo after munching on cow pats in particular.

I'm sure the dog will be fine

liveforsummer · 30/04/2023 22:01

Mine loves sheep poo 🤢 even more than horse poo and she's never had a problem. She's a 6 kilo terrier too so more likely to be affected than a bigger dog

OuchIStubbedMyBigToe · 30/04/2023 22:02

Thanks all for the reassurance.

I feel extra responsible because he isn't ours...it's like looking after someone else's baby!

I think you're right - totally TMI but the poo was really soft and very dark, i think it literally is the sheep poo coming back out the sausage machine.

Just hoping we don't wake to some steaming piles of 🐑 💩 in the kitchen in the morning Confused.

Bless him, he's been the best boy apart from that!!

Is it a labrador? If so, they'll be fine

(Been there, done that.)

No surprise there then 😅 he will probably throw it up somewhere, or if not he will be fine!

OuchIStubbedMyBigToe · 30/04/2023 22:14

I think he must have eaten way more than we thought - he did try a fair few times (we were in a country park) and he has a massive mouth so must have inhaled loads 🤮

@miniegg3 he kept doing sheep shit burps...was rather hoping he would throw it up tbh!!

Horse poo can be quite dangerous, even fatal, to dogs if the horse has just been wormed, so worth trying to stop them if possible. Though, as the servant of a spaniel myself, I know it’s easier said than done.

Georgiepud · 30/04/2023 22:19

I never knew that about horse poo. Our lab likes it.

Just be ready through the night to get to the back door quickly if he asks.

OuchIStubbedMyBigToe · 01/05/2023 07:08

I'm pleased to report that idiot dog had left us no surprise packages this morning, his poo this morning did still have a dark tinge to it but was intact. He is very much his very loveable self. Thanks all!

There’s an ingredient in some horse worming medications that is toxic to dogs.
