Bloody dog not on lead

Walking dsis’ dog today, looking after him whilst she’s away. He’s a big breed but good temperament, recall, doesn’t pull on lead etc.

Out of no where a lab cross runs up to us, we start trying to keep walking, dsis’ dog not showing it much interest. I looked around for the owner (popular walking spot) but couldn’t see anyone… the lab cross then decides to keep annoying dsis dog, in his face, starts bearing teeth…

Dsis’ dog yanks in opposite direction to try and get away which of course pulls me over. I’m by this point covered in mud, hands bleeding (on a hard path) with still no owner on site. Other dog walkers standing back obviously not wanting to get close as that would’ve just meant people and other dogs in the middle of the lab cross and dsis’ dog.

my own dog at this point is barking but trying to keep away from the lab cross.

still no dog owner in sight…

eventually idiot owner comes running saying they’re sorry, they’ll get my jacket cleaned etc…my hands still bleeding and I tell them they need to keep their dog on lead if no recall as whilst dsis dog hasn’t reacted aggressively, the next dog on lead might well do…:

”yes of course” says idiot owner and starts to walk away….

I start on my way back to the car but sit at the side of the path for a few minutes to try and get the mud of the cuts on my hands…

can you guess what happens next? Of course idiot owner has taken their dog back off the lead and it comes bounding up again. I took dsis dog and my dog near the water which seemed to deter it but my god, how idiotic as an owner can you be?

the poor dog looked about two, totally unsocialised as no boundaries. Why oh why do some people get dogs if they cant/ won’t look after it properly?

This does my head in. Let your dog off if it has good recall. There’s a couple of bouncy labs in our park that are regularly let run free, fine except my DDog is dog reactive and kept on a very tight lead near other dogs. So far nothing concerning has happened but I fear it will soon.

Sympathy from here. I have a nervous, sometimes reactive dog, and we are working very hard to help her. She's been doing brilliantly.. passing on lead dogs without reacting etc.
Then two days ago I was in a usually empty field, she was off lead. I saw someone enter the field with two dogs, and very very clearly clipped my dog back on. Other owner did not, and her two staffies ran up and encircled my dog!

They were actually friendly but my dog was scared stiff (and coped very well considering just barked). I called politely and asked the owner to recall her dogs as mine was scared and got ' sorry the little buggers never listen to me'!!!

Well don't fucking let them off then!!!! She was lucky that my girl has progressed enough to not turn into a snarling (and large) demon!

We got away as fast as possible, but it has set my girl back a fair bit. I think the owner could probably see the steam coming out of my ears....Angry

Sympathy here too.

I was walking two of my clients dogs back home yesterday - we were down a back street between two rows of terraced houses when a springer spaniel bombed over to us to say hello.

He was friendly but one of the dogs I was walking is injured and the other is nervous around other dogs - the other owner didn't even bother to come and get his dog until I shouted him over and even then he just sauntered over 🙄

We were also about two feet from a main road!

I completely relate to this. I have a reactive pup we are working hard on helping and everytime things go well, an off lead dog will run up to us and like you I put her back on lead and try to walk away but by then my pup has barked and gone from 0-60. It annoys me when you are trying to train a reactive/fearful dog you get idiots that make that training harder. We end up going back to square one and then I get people asking why my dog is the way she is or how I'm doing something wrong and it really grinds on me. Small dogs are the worst sometimes at running up to us. Another thing that bugs me is when they try to stroke her randomly without asking or even if she's barking they'll still try.

Sympathies. We go to a local park where my dog socialises with other well trained, off lead with recall dogs.

Again this morning I've had to put my dog back on lead and leave because one woman never trained a dog she physically can't keep up with. It's off lead and harassing other dogs.

People have repeatedly spoken to her and shown training techniques, but she insists on telling her dog to play mine because mine tolerates the exuberance. Drives me mad as I don't want mine playing with an out of control dog!
