What do you feed your dog?

Dog 1 is currently on chappie wet because he has pancreatitis but it's beginning to become quite unaffordable at £2 a can and he needs 2 a day, (lab x corgi)

Dog 2 alternates between raw and kibble, very athletic border terrier who will lose weight at the drop of a hat. She's adorable but a picky sod when it comes to food!

Please help me figure out a type of kibble for Dog 1, he can't have high fat because of the pancreatitis, happy to keep them on different foods but really he needs to transition to dry food so I can bulk order it. He eats everything and Is a bin on legs!

I feed my dog Orijen or Acana kibble, and buy one fish based and one meat based, and alternate each meal, usually I put a fork of corned beef or tinned mackerel on it.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 30/04/2023 18:47

Wolfworthy kibble plus I poach a chicken for her once a week.
She’s a fussy bugger so given up trying anything new. She was raw fed for a few months but went off it (and it was expensive).

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 30/04/2023 18:49

I get a bag delivered every 7-8 weeks so about £1 a day for kibble.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 30/04/2023 18:49

I got a load of free or cheap kibble samples before I found one she’d eat, might be worth trying?

IngGenius · 30/04/2023 19:00

The lowest fat dry dog food use to be Autarky Mature lite Salmon at 5%fat.

Not sure if this is still the case though

donutque · 30/04/2023 19:04

Butternut box for two dogs and James Wellbeloved for kibble (recommended by the nutritionist)

expensive dogs

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 30/04/2023 19:07

Harringtons small dog kibble, chicken/Turkey. Very fussy terrier and this is all he will eat.

Tygertiger · 30/04/2023 19:08

Millie’s Wolfheart topped with either Butternut box or homemade.

NotLovingWFH · 30/04/2023 20:14

A handful of Wolfworthy and half a tub of Naturo twice a day. Wolfworthy is £54 every 7 weeks and the Naturo is in the supermarkets for about £1.30 per tub. Both foods are highly rare on All About Dogfood and DDog is doing well on them.

NotLovingWFH · 30/04/2023 20:15

Highly rated not rare🙄.

Titsywoo · 30/04/2023 20:48

I foster dogs and we tend to give them poached white fish, cauliflower, brocolli and carrots (veg all cooked) mashed together with a small handful of kibble. We buy the white fish frozen so it doesn't work out too expensive.

I stopped feeding this as it's grey and dusty and with no smell. Other foods in the same brand smell meaty/fishy and herby.

Frances24 · 30/04/2023 21:37

Where are you buying the chappie?

My parents’ dog has it and 24 tins are about £30 in pets at home.

Yep I wouldnt recommend it but if the op wants low fat dry food there options are pretty small.

Although there is a lot of research saying that pancreatitis is not caused by high fat but high fat in blood which they think is higher in a high carb diet. I am no medic so have no idea how true this is.

I have fed my dog with pancreatitis on a raw diet as raw food is high in protein but low fat but that is not what the op asked about

At the moment because i can't drive after surgery I have to go to the co op and £2 a tin. Pets at home won't deliver to us because of where we live.

We use PURINA Pro Plan Gastrointestinal EN (one of Purina's "prescription" or "veterinary" diets).

It's low fat at 10.5%. Viovet sell it at seemingly the best consistent price.

Looks like it would suit a dog with pancreatitis - that's not why we use it, he just can't tolerate anything else and will now probably stay on this for life, which the vet is happy with.

I'm really pleased with it.

rollingpunches · 30/04/2023 22:44

Millie's wolfheart for a lab. 12kg is £45. Lasts a month.

FangedFrisbee · 30/04/2023 23:36

@IngGenius really? My vet was very insistent he needs a low fat diet. If that's not the case then maybe I should do some research

OP posts:
IngGenius · 01/05/2023 08:26

Yes vets are very insistent and I am not sure that I would be able to go against what they are saying. It has been the treatment method for years. I just said what research is showing recently

Guru from Pet Shopper (free delivery) https://www.pet-shopper.co.uk/static/Guru-Cold-Pressed-Dog-Food he devours it. We tried to economise a little a while back with Markus-Mühle which he was ok with but https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food/markus_muehle/14524?variantid=14524.4&gclid=CjwKCAjwxr2iBhBJEiwAdXECwww195E1t13STIwhYya1GXq-JKKOfje0nSiEE_MENwiBMVpuS0atoRoCGZAQAvD_BwE but he was nowhere near as excited as with his Guru and as we use his food to train and reinforce behaviours with (and we don't have kids 🤣) we went back to Guru. He literally jumped for joy when he was back in it. His coat is amazingly glossy, he's in good lean shape, bright eyed and his bowels regular and firm as clockwork. He has a selection of body parts as treats for his teeth - rabbit/pig/buffalo ears, beef trachea etc (2 year old working line black lab)

Tbh I wouldn't be taking dietary advice from a vet! Most of them are useless and their knowledge completely out of date on dog nutrition. They do next to no training on the subject!
Most commercial kibble isn't that great. Raw or lightly cooked fresh food is much much better for them so longs as it's balanced. Plenty of companies offering reasonably priced raw or lightly cooked diets now too so not really any excuse not to be feeding them a healthy diet.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 01/05/2023 15:41

Harringtons low-fat biscuits mixed with Harringtons grain-free wet food, plus he gets a weetabix and some Plaque-Off powder with his meals too.

PieonaBarm · 01/05/2023 21:03

Chappie do a dry version, you can buy it from Amazon

Iheartmysmart · 01/05/2023 21:08

I swapped my show cocker to raw after he had a bout of pancreatitis about 7 years ago. He’s been absolutely fine since and had no flare ups.
