Dog’s limp has suddenly gone - what would you do?

My 4 year old dog has had a limp since early February. After a few appoints and an X-ray at our local vet, she was referred to a specialist. We’ve waited 6 weeks for the appointment which is next week but now it seems to have suddenly gone!

If you were in my shoes would you still go ahead? The initial appointment involves a consultation and CT scan, possibly an MRI as well. I do have insurance but will still have to pay around £300 - £2500. I’m 99% sure I am still going to take her but I’m going to feel really daft (and a bit peeved) if it turns out there is nothing wrong with her. I am not mad to go ahead with it am I?

Bloody typical 😐

You need to do it whislt insurance covers it, after 12 months it will be excluded

This depends on the policy, my pets are on a for life policy, so there aren’t time restrictions on any treatment.

SuperMarrio · 27/04/2023 23:17

It’s a life time policy but they are pretty awful. I’m stuck with them now as no other insurer will cover her for leg injuries now. They still haven’t paid out for the X-rays I had done in March….

Still go. Imagine if you cancel and limp returns next day!

PollyPeptide · 27/04/2023 23:41

You could always say you've got covid and ask if they could delay the appointment. Then monitor how she goes on.

Why lie?

Just say the limp has settled and you would rather wait a while until you do anymore tests!

I don't suppose you have also had a limp?

This owner paid out for vet fees then noticed his dog didn't limp when walking with his son!

Limping dog copies his injured owner out of sympathy

A heartwarming video has emerged of the moment a dog imitates his injured owner's limp out of sympathy as he walks beside him

I would delay , when my dog was about 3 he had a recurrent front leg limp , we had X-rays and scans and they never did find the cause , eventually just said it was soft tissue injury and it cleared up on its own with rest .

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/04/2023 22:27

Can you take her back to your normal vet and have them check her over? That way you can make an informed decision about what to do.

Was actually about to ask the same thing, as our dog started walking with a very pronounced limp - we room her to the vet etc, nothing wrong with her.
My dad (who she lives, and walked her regularly) had recently had bad knees and knee surgery, and as soon as he stopped limping...so did she. Vet thought it was hilarious 🙄😂

That's so cute! I love dogs, can't imagine a human humouring in that way!

BoobyDazzler · 29/04/2023 06:14

I’d just assume it was a sprain or a thorn and consider it resolved.

DogDaysNeverEnd · 29/04/2023 06:44

If the limp is gone why put the dog through the fuss of all the tests? I'm sure you can just let the vet know and they can place the referral on hold, no need to fib.

I once met a dog who would limp for attention. She's be running around quite happily (if you were watching from, say, a window or a location she couldn't see anyone), then as soon as she saw someone come round the corner she'd start limping. It took a long time to train her out of it and she still put on the act with strangers at the point when I last saw her!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 29/04/2023 07:28

@Poppins2016 my dog limps for attention 🙈 he also limps if there's a leaf or a twig on his foot 🙄

Yup, this was what cottoned us on to it too, when she would happily sprint for 10 mins after her ball playing fetch but would then limp randomly at other times. They're so funny 😂

Justmemyselfandi999 · 29/04/2023 09:17

I'd still take them. It could be something like OCD that has now fused, but treatment would still be beneficial.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 29/04/2023 10:54

@NewtyB I walked him the other week and he was properly limping - holding his paw up like he'd cut it - no, there was a leaf on the top of his paw that was bothering him 😂

MoreOfADogPerson · 29/04/2023 12:20

Has she had a check by a canine physio? If she's stopped limping it could be soft tissue injuries that are healing but there might still be some discomfort

Haha I remember this. No, I didn’t have a limp.

I am still deciding what to do. Her limp was quite nasty and the X-ray showed minor calcification. But it’s definitely completely gone now. So frustrating!

She gets so distressed at the vets, especially when we leave, so that’s another consideration I have to weigh up. I might give the referral hospital a call and ask their advice.

Our local vet did say there was very minor calcification of the shoulder joint, which I think for a four year old dog is a bit unusual. That being said, the fact that it’s completely gone might mean it was just a soft tissue injury.

Video of the limp here:

She had this limp since late January/early February. Can’t believe it’s suddenly gone 😑 (obvs I am happy if she is no longer in pain).

Hmmm. My four year old spaniel is currently getting physio for very tight muscles in his back and back legs probably caused by an unnoticed injury at some stage and then exacerbated by idiot spaniel behaviour.

The vet can never see it because he's so hyper in there that he's just flooded with adrenaline, but the physio comes to the house and was able to observe and examine him in his own surroundings and I can definitely see his pain reaction then.

Maybe give it another day or two?

MoreOfADogPerson · 02/05/2023 18:33

Also she is gorgeous 😍
