Pancreatitis advice

My dog may have pancreatitis - have to take her for another blood test next week. If you have experience of this what do you feed your dogs? Mine is currently raw fed but when I spoke to the vet today he said she would need to change her diet. Do you use pre/probiotic paste and can you still give low fat treats? Any other advice gratefully received.

Low fat is recommended for pancreatitis and you can get low fat raw food. (although recent research say it is not just high fat but more blood fats and dogs eating meat have lower blood fats than dogs on a high carb diet - but that thinking has not yet become widespread)

Paleo Ridge do a 4% fat content raw food. For comparison Hills digestive 1/d recommended for pancreatitis has 4% fat content.

Nutriment also do a low fat diet.

What raw food does your dog have at the moment.

Hope they feel better soon

My dog had pancreatitis, I used to cook his food after he got diagnosed. There are some good fb groups, that can advice you on raw feeding a pancreatic dog

My dog is on a burns one for seniors and the vet agreed it was a good one for her. So far so good :)

Thank you so much for the replies. I currently feed her a complete raw food - it's from a local place and their own brand. Her current food is around 8% fat. They sell lots of different brands though and I need to go on Saturday so will look for low fat options. I don't really want to stop raw feeding if I can help it. Looks like I need to stop giving her sprats as they are high in fat but fish skins seem lower so maybe I'll stick with them. I'll obviously take advice from the vet when/if it's confirmed but I wanted to make sure I wasn't making things worse in the meantime. Thanks again.

It may say 8% fat but what's the % of moisture? You may find on a dry matter basis, the fat percentage is much higher than stated. Look online for how to calculate

Yourownpersonaljesus · 27/04/2023 22:07

Thanks @Seenandheard I'll look into that tomorrow (off to bed now).

My dog had acute pancreatitis and I fed on a very bland egg/chicken diet until his stools returned to normal and then low fat, grain free food and never had any human food again, to be careful

My little dog has ongoing pancreas problems and we control it by:

  • changing her raw food to Natural Instinct special diet food (it's lower fat)
  • cutting out all treats and no little bits of cheese etc when we're cooking (which she loved 🥺 but causes a flare up)
  • I order Lypex capsules from Viovet online. We originally got these from our vets but they cost a lot more. They're available without prescription and are the pancreatic enzymes that help support their pancreas.
  • Giving her two smaller meals a day and putting a raw egg on her tea, doesn't seem to cause a flare up as it's high protein low fat.

If I run out of the Lypex she starts throwing up yellow bile again and being a bit quiet so they definitely help.

Also raw food with tripe seems to cause a flare up. I thought it was low fat and gentle on their tummies but clearly not. I make bone broth with chicken bones in a pressure cooker too which she loves. I tried making bone broth with pigs feet but it was too fatty and caused a flare up 😭

Our last dog had pancreatitis. We used Hill’s digestive and a barking heads one (chicken I think). We still gave him treats just were careful to check the packets if shop bought. The vet told us under what percentage level of fat was ok.

We were also very strict with telling people not to give him anything when they came round. Yes he might fancy that chip or sausage but they will make him very ill!!

ART2022 · 28/04/2023 15:20

Our dog has pancreatitis and we’ve not had any trips to the vet since we changed her to Butternut box low fat, think the chicken and Turkey are the only suitable ones, no treats, no human food etc. Chappie is also a really good alternative, recommended by our vet. We also don’t let other dog walkers give her treats, which makes us feel very mean. We found she can have slight flare ups from the smallest amounts of fatty foods so it’s better for all of us if we’re very strict.

We were advised to use Burns dry food by our vet. Our dog hasn't had a flare up since switching to Burns a few years go.

Be careful with eggs as they are high in cholesterol which can trigger an attack (to pp who mentioned feeding their dogs eggs!)

We just used it in small portions to get him settled, with chicken - the bland medical dog food from the vets as well. Def don’t over do eggs
