Tic removed from my dog’s neck during groom..worried!

I took my dog in for a bath and brush at the local groomers, and when I picked him up they told me they found and removed a tic from his neck, she showed it to me in a little bag 😱 so worried now that my dog may have Lyme disease, and also concerned as he has been sleeping on my little boys bed for the last few weeks! I’m going to take my dog to the vets for a check over although he seems fine. Have also checked my boy and can’t see any lumps or bites. Anyone experienced this?

Dogs get tics all the time. It’s really nothing to worry about, especially as it’s been removed!

If you have been using the vet-prescribed tick and flew prevention, it would have been dead. Just keep an eye on where it was attached. I wouldn't bother with a vet visit. And it won't be on your child if it fell off your dog.

Not necessarily, the worm and flea plan our vets provide doesn't treat/prevent ticks at all.

Not that I think the op has anything to worry about.

You will be in the vets a lot if you go for every single tic. There are loads about in our area. There is no need to visit the vet for one tick.

I brush off tick every single walk off every single dog each day before hey get a chance to attach to my dogs but some still do.

Use tick prevention which should kill the tick in 24 hours but they will likely still attach to your dog and then drop off.

It is worth having a tick remover so you can remove them when you see them.

Many vet plans do cover ticks so do ask them.

This is one of many reasons I do not have my dogs in my bed!

I removed a tick from my actual child after she’d been in the woods on a school trip. No negative consequences. You’re catastrophising a bit here.

BiteyShark · 26/04/2023 04:12

I assume this is the first time you have encountered a tick

I have had one, my DH many and lots were pre dog as we live and walk near forests with deers.

My dog has many all through the year now because they are everywhere. We just use nexgard spectra which kills then in about 24 hours after they attach. There are other solutions including seresto collars that you could try but honestly ticks are a fact of life in a lot of places in the UK.

yeah... another one who has had to pull them off my pets & kids. Nobody seems to have been ill, yet.

There's absolutely nothing a vet will be able to do about this.

Is your dog on tick prevention medication? If not, how's the time to start but it is tick season and they're very common - they just need removing and getting rid of.

Sillybanana · 26/04/2023 20:52

Sorry guys it seems I am catastrophising. Spot the city dweller! It is the first time I’ve encountered one. Everyone seems fine! Thanks for the reassurance.

No need to apologise. That is the point of forums like this... to ask and get advice or reassurance when needed. If you were not a tad worried, that would be worse, I think, if you are new to these little blighters and Lyme disease is a nasty thing.

I haven't seen a tick on either of my dogs since we started using Billy No Mates. One pinch on their food once a day. Vet was sniffy about it when I told her but we used to see ticks pretty often before so I'm sticking with it.

I use Bravecto. One tablet lasts 4 months, so 2 for the year and he’s covered. I never find a live tick on him.
