Urgent advice before vets open

10 year old miniature schnauzer, has kissing spine and is in monthly librella injections )(last one 10 days ago)

Last night she went out to kitchen for a drink and I noticed her back legs looked weird aans she was almost crouching as she walked.got her to walk about a bit with me and dh watching - they seems to get a bit less odd as she walked but she kept sitting down.

Fast forward a whole night where she's just slept in one position - got up from her sleep to get food and she couldn't stand - her back legs just kept giving way - she stood for a bit whilst eating but almost crouched.

She let out a tiny bit of poo on Sunday in the hous and it's like she didn't even know.

I'm so worried - calling vets to get emergency appointment but any advice or experience of this would be really appreciated

No real advice, does your vets have an emergency out of hours number? I'd be ringing that tbh.

It's awful seeing your pet in pain, my terrier started wobbling on her back legs, luckily it was just a strain but I was so worried and, of course, you think the worst.

Hoping everything is ok

I've got an appt at 11.15 - it's just that I am assuming the worst because of a feeling - it's like her hips cannot take her weight or she cannot feel enough to stand? It's the dropped poo too - she had no idea, didn't even crouch.

She does have the kissing spine and I keep thinking maybe her last injection didn't work?

I love her so much I cannot explain.

We had a foster dog with Spondylosis Deformans. They had discs that compressed the nerves and where unable to walk and move their back legs. They had surgery and went on to have some very happy years afterwards.

I really hope there will be a good solution for your dog and hope she is feeling comfortable soon.

It is such a worry when they are poorly

helpyhelperton · 25/04/2023 08:43

Thank you, I think the kissing spine is known as spondylitis, it may well be that but it was so sudden and seems so awful, I don't usually catastrophise but it's a feeling I get.

Thinking of you helpy.
They are so precious, our beloved family members.
Prayers for the best possible outcome.

No advice but a big hug. Hope it’s a problem easily resolved.

Thinking of you, it's awful seeing our dogs in pain and not being able to help. Mine has arthritis and I wish I could take it away. You've done everything you can so try not to overthink right now, it could be as simple as a pulled muscle/spasm type of thing.

helpyhelperton · 26/04/2023 07:54

Sorry didn't update.

She's is pain - and it's her kissing spine. She felt everything the vet did, so it's not neurological which is a massive relief.

On a concoction of painkillers til the weekend.

I can't tell if she's hugely improved because she's been on bed rest and she's a so lazy anyway.

I'd say she's probably a bit better which is encouraging but I haven't thought past the weekend because what happens if we can't manage her pain she's only 12 days past Librela which is supposed to be masking the pain?

I love her so much but I won't let her suffer. This is too soon for me, I'm not ready. I've always thought we'd have her til 13, I've been psyching myself up towards that.

I just want to cry and I've got to get to work.

There are loads of pain killing options so dont think too far ahead at the moment.

Librela works for some dogs and not others. So the fact it is not working is ok many dogs have been in the same situation and got relief from other drugs.

It is good news that she seems a little better

Fingers crossed and Flowers for you

I just wanted to add my own experience of Librela. Although it did work very well from a pain point of view unfortunately our dog suffered urinary incontinence whilst on it - faecal incontinence has also been reported.

I hope your girl is feeling more comfortable now 😊
