My dog is too thin

Just that really, I am really worried and I wonder if we are missing anything. She is having more bloods at the vet this week, she has seen the vet regularly about this, and is getting weighed every couple of weeks.
She is prone to colitis, and a few years ago started regurgitating her food undigested. This stopped after a few months, she hasn’t done that for ages - she had investigations at the time which showed nothing apart from low B12.
Since her first episode of colitis, she has lost weight and not regained it. She should be at least 13kg. She went down to 11.5 and was that weight for quite a while but this past year or so she has lost another kg, and has gone down a little bit more from 10.5 to 10.4 over the past fortnight.
She is very thin, ribs sticking out, hipbones protruding. She is on three smallish meals a day , we changed food as suggested by the vet as she kept getting loose poo or diarrhoea on her old food. She has been on this new food , (arrives frozen, basically chicken with vegetables, no grains), for about six months and it doesn’t irritate her gut, it looks as though she is digesting it, yet she is slowly getting thinner.
I am wincing when I stroke her or pick her up, as she is so much lighter than she used to be. She is on the recommended amount of food for an underweight dog of her size to gain weight. If we increase it much more or give her anything extra eg biscuits with grains in then she gets diarrhoea, so we can’t just give her more food.
Any thoughts appreciated. She is averagely active, snoozes a lot at home but will run on her walks. Not a hyper dog like a collie.

Good news the op went ok. She will be so glad to be home. Thank you for keeping us updated

Theoscargoesto · 10/06/2023 20:18

Thanks for the update. Fingers crossed here! Do keep us posted.

She is home and sleeping. She has eaten, and although she was obviously weak and shocked looking when she arrived home, she looks better than I had imagined for the day after such huge surgery. Especially given her general condition. Thank you so much for all the good wishes.
I should have name changed and then I could have posted a picture of her.
Histology results should be back quite quickly, so that might give us some more information.

How’s things @SirVixofVixHall?

Theoscargoesto · 11/07/2023 06:56

@SirVixofVixHall how is your dog doing? I seem to be bizarrely invested and so wonder…… have fingers crossed.

I was thinking earlier that I should update, thank you so much for thinking of her. She has recovered really well from the actual surgery, all healed, but when we dropped the anti seizure medication she started fitting again. (Only when we got down to a quarter tablet). So the vet felt maybe that needed to be done more slowly, medication was upped again and now we are weaning her off it dropping the dose in increments ever fortnight. So far no more fits but she has weeks to go before the dose is as low as when they last returned.
Otherwise, she is still thin. That is a worry now, she should be putting weight on. She gained a bit of weight in the week post surgery but since then has stayed at just over ten kilos. She is getting weighed again today or tomorrow, so that will be key as to what happens next.
She has also had odd bouts of drinking a lot, something she doesn’t normally do at all. Not a daily thing, but every few days. Then she has accidents in the house. Might be something to do with her medication?
So still not out of the woods, and of course a chance the tumour could recur somewhere else although not a given. It was grade 1, so not aggressive thankfully.

Thanks for the update. It’s great that she came through the surgery and that all seemed a success, but it sounds like things are still unclear and worrying for you. Is there any suggestion that the tumour might have caused stomach issues/malabsorption etc? I do hope you get some answers when she is weighed next and I wish you and her all the best.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/07/2023 22:28

The vet felt that the tumour could have been affecting systemically and causing the weight loss, but he also thought that she should be getting noticeably fatter by now and she isn’t . She was weighed this morning and she has put on a very small amount, .2 of a kilo, which might be good or might just be natural fluctuation. At least she hasn’t continued to lose weight. She is still very hungry all the time though.

I guess trying to look at the positives, no further loss. I also guess you have thought about all the ideas about increasing calories that have been suggested. I know you’ve said she has had stomach issues. What did the vet suggest? Thinking of you, it’s horrid when you can’t find answers.
