Really confused by puppy feeding

I need an idiots guide to feeding my 10 week old puppy. I am feeding Aukarty dry food with Asda Hero wet (this is what the breeder fed him and I'm transitioning one bit at a time)

The packets advise a huge amount and he is only a tiny thing.

If I want to feed him an egg in the morning how much wet and dry food should I be feeding him?

2kg, 10wk Yorkie

Why do you want to feed him an egg? If you think about it, one whole egg is actually a lot of food for a tiny puppy. Better that you stick to actual dog food that will give him the range of nutrients he needs in proportionate quantities.

Eggs can make them constipated as well. I’d save the treats until later and even then give in tiny amounts for such a small pup.

You can pretty much ignore quantities on the packs - they always say more than they need IME unless for very active working dogs.

Absolutely this.

It's really just trial and error when working out how much your dog needs to eat as the quantity on the pack/tin is always ridiculous.

You have to watch how your dog's behaviour is (are they thriving) and the dog's condition: not thin, not fat.

My 12 year old small dog, according to the advice on the tin should be having 307grams of food a day but actually has 203grams.

She's lively, happy, and according to my vet her weight, which remains stable, and condition, are perfect.

As MuttsNutts says, unless your dog is a hard working dog you need much less than the manufactures suggest.

Adding an egg shouldn't be necessary either. Just feed a good quality food.

He had scrambled egg when with his litter and we've just kept it going as he loves it.

It's a complete minefield!

It's all a bit of trial and error, really.

As PP have said, what's on the packet is generally more than you need - remember, their goal is to get you to buy as much as possible Wink

How much you feed really depends on how active your dog is, whether you mix wet and dry and whether you add extras. If you feed too much, your dog may be sick, or have runny poo, or be reluctant to eat his meals. I would go with what's on the packet minus 10% for now, and then reduce further when you add an egg etc.

The guidelines on the packs are ridiculous, the recommended daily amount for my wee pup is 180g to 300g a day, he eats nowhere near the 180g but he is growing, has plenty of energy and almost firm poop but also isn't a bag of bones, but I'm currently swapping his food to a better quality food and the feeding guidelines are for his age group and expected weight is 145g, so I just feed a small handful throughout the day.

An egg is 100 calories, give or take. That’s a lot for a small dog.

I go by body condition and I like my dogs to be on the lean side as it’s so much healthier for them. So feed by the handful and reduce if I’m adding in significant treats or high calorie chews. It is trial and error. She gets nowhere near the recommendation.
