Anxiety in dogs

looking for a bit of advice…I have a cockapoo who is coming up for four years old.

we got him in 2019, we both work part time and have teenagers at home. He has a dog Walker. He’s a lovely boy but he’s always been anxious in the car, crying, panting etc. He’s never been sick or drooled.

Even at home he’s been quite anxious and wound up. He doesn’t sit still for very long, sort of restless. He has separation anxiety if
we take him to a pub and one of
us goes to the bar, he cries.

The car problem really got us down. Over Easter we tried a trip to the beach. He cried loudly all the way there and back.

Afterwards I took him to the vet to ask
for treatment to allow him to cope with car journeys because he is really restricting our life.

The vet prescribed Xanax. We tried it at the weekend and he was much, much better and tolerated a two hour journey to a place where he had a great time.

i noticed afterwards That he was much calmer when we got home, and he stopped pacing the house. Im guessing that the medication was still in his system. The question is, does he need anti-anxiety meds every day? He was like a different dog on the Xanax.

Meds can help but if it’s just the car and someone going off then there is good behavioural work you can do instead. It’s pretty successful quickly too. The tricky thing is managing it whilst you work on it as any stress will set you back.

Look up desensitising to car journeys and the Hokey Cokey game.
