For my Cavi.

So that when we visit family, she has a little quiet space to take herself off to.

Also for short car rides when not sufficient space in boot for crate and all passenger seats taken (rare but sometimes if I am picking up other children as a favour!)

I bought a folding fabric crate from Amazon, was about £25. It hasn't got a top opening so it feels very den-like. There are roll-up panels on the sides, about half the height, but I have rarely used them.

What have you used them for?

and what do you use in the car? And at home? Thanks

If all the seats and boot is full, I'm not sure there's a way for her to travel legally and safely in the car.

Personally I would never put a dog in the footwell (even crated) as if you get in an accident, they're in a really precarious position.

At home I would just use a foldable fabric crate (assuming she's crate trained) with blankets etc. from home for comfort.

The boot only too full for the crate when not sufficient space in boot for crate
hence looking for a smaller portable carrier that will fit in to the boot at times like this

What about a large, solid type cat carrier?

I just left them rolled down. In the car the dogs are behind a dog guard and at home standard plastic dog beds with vetbed.

The law about carrying dogs in cars changed some years ago. They have to be crated, or behind a guard, or wearing a harness that clips into the seatbelt. The dog must not be loose in the cabin, able to access or distract the driver. Insurance can be invalidated if you are in an accident. Every day I see people carrying their dogs illegally.

How on earth would you know whether the dog was attached to the seat via the harness?

Well @Cleoforever in the same way as you'd know that someone isn't wearing a seatbelt or using their phone or drink driving. You're either spotted by the police or you have an accident.

No because the seat belt goes across the person

the harness doesn’t

The Highway Code suggests using a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard as ways to restrain your animal in the car.

I'm really not clear what you're arguing about here Confused

tabulahrasa · 19/04/2023 11:18

Could you not just get a smaller crate? Fabric ones are pretty pointless in a car as they’d not hold a dog secure in an accident anyway and any kind of plastic carrier big enough would take up more space than a crate.

Because she hopes she can put the dog in the footwell as there is no room for him elsewhere. It's usually pretty obvious when a dog is inadequately restrained, and certainly would be in an accident or police stop. But I agree - we try to help and get no thanks.

Clymene · 19/04/2023 12:05

@Spanielsarepainless - I thought she wanted to put the pet carrier in the boot?

I'm finding this thread v confusing Grin
