Last walk of the day

My dog is becoming more and more reluctant to go out his last walk of the day before bedtime, purely down to laziness I guess as he runs up to my bed instead. Tonight I chased him a bit (mainly jokingly) before giving in & letting him laze out on the bed. I last walked him a few hours ago about 4:30pm but I feel going from now until morning is a bit too long to go without going to the toilet (he's a 5 y/o cockapoo for context).

Should I 'make' him go on the walk or accept he would rather just sleep?

If he isn't bothered I would let him sleep. Will he not toilet in the garden?

My 2 year old cockapoo will sometimes choose to hold his bladder for 10-12 hours. We give him the opportunity to go much more regularly but even if you drag him out in bad weather he often won’t go.

He may prefer to sleep now, but will he agitate to go out in the middle of the night? 😬

My lazy dog will go 14+hrs overnight without going to the toilet.

No garden you can let him in last thing?
If he needs to go to the toilet overnight then you know that next time you’ll have to make him go for a walk.

DoraTheScottishExplorer · 12/04/2023 21:50

My dog would prefer to skip his bedtime walk but would then want out ridiculously early in the morning. He can go 12/13hrs overnight but will usually start to suggest he needs out at that point occasionally earlier. He's always been a morning dog and after about 5pm he very much wants to relax.

That's the thing... he will, under no circumstances, go to the toilet in the garden. He hasn't woken us up needing to go to the toilet since he was a puppy. The bladder strength seems astonishing. He will get out about 7am tomorrow when we wake but he doesn't often bark to get out. I feel as though I'm worrying about a situation that really doesn't bother him.

My first dog went 23 hours without a pee during a spell of very wet weather. One of the current ones regularly goes from 5.30 in the evening till 6.30 in the morning. I let him out before bed and he looks at as if I have a screw loose.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 13/04/2023 06:55

I think if he won't toilet in the garden then I would be making him go for a quick wee - just because I'd rather do that then get up and take him at 5am.

Mindymomo · 13/04/2023 07:04

We have a nearly 5 year old border collie, his last walk is at 4.30 pm and he goes out in the garden of an evening, sometimes he does a wee and sometimes he doesn’t. He would walk all day if it were down to him. Occasionally he barks in the night needing to go out, like today he barked at 5 am, although he did a long wee at 10 pm last night, so we never really know. If your dog is fine and not needing to go out and going to bed early, then I’d leave the last walk out.

pilates · 13/04/2023 07:10

I think I would make him. We do an early night walk about 7pm with a sometimes reluctant dog because I don’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night. Not sure if there are any vets on here, but just wondered if it’s healthy to wait so long between toilet breaks for dogs?

Girlintheframe · 13/04/2023 07:40

It totally depends on the dog I would say. Ours gets his last walk about 6.30pm and won't go again until around 10am the next day. Previous dog though wanted out very last thing at night and again as soon as he woke in the morning. If your pup has a bladder of steel like mine, I wouldn't bother about the evening walk if they didn't want it.

Sweetleftfood · 13/04/2023 09:26

My one can hold out forever, if I let him out at dark, all he does is scurrying around trying to find fox smells and squirrels and totally forgets to pee. He never wakes us up in the night unless he has an upset tummy and also I have to persuade him to get of the bed to go out for a pee in the morning too

BiteyShark · 13/04/2023 10:09

I take mine out at night in the garden for a quick pee.

However sometimes he won't get up. I try and lift him so he has to stand but he does this floppy not moving thing and seems to go through the night without needing the toilet. Therefore if he gets up then I take him out otherwise I just leave him.

If I was you I would see what happens when you don't take him for a walk.

ReadersD1gest · 13/04/2023 10:48

Envy of you all. Mine has a bladder the size of a pea.

Newpeep · 13/04/2023 11:59

If they don't need it don't bother. Our dog only routinely has one big walk a day in the mornings and she uses the garden for everything else. Bed time we have trained 'bed time biscuit' so she leaps up for that then into the garden for last wees before bed.

But if they can hold it and a lot of dogs can then don't worry.

Floralnomad · 13/04/2023 13:48

I would take him out as it’s a long time to go without a wee but turn round as soon as he’s been . This is one of the issues with not training your dog to toilet in the garden . Our elderly dog now only has one walk a day , usually late morning , but he has his last wee between 9:30 /10 pm before going to bed . I’m sure he could do without this wee as he can hold it for 14 hours + but I like him to go . My dog wees on a command word , could you train yours to do the same in the garden .
