Any vets on here asap?!

Hi all,
Any opinions / guidance here would be really, gratefully appreciated.

Our 7 year old Jack russel cross done two wee’s last Sunday and Monday. He done one wee Sunday which was blood then it went back to usual colour. Then Monday another blood wee then back to usual colour. We got him into our vets who took a urine sample to send off and gave us antibiotics. There’s been no more blood urines since. Dog is acting completely normal, eating, pooping, running etc nothing out the usual.

Vets phoned back today to say that the wee was high in alkaline, Suboptimal urine and amorphous crystals urine.

They want him in for a wee sample and blood sample, then they want to sedate him and scan Abdomen.

Firstly; we would pay anything for our boy of course and he is insured etc. but this (large) chain of vets have previously fobbed us off with a few medicine bits (painkillers / ear spray) that wasn’t needed etc. My partner took the call and just agreed to it all…

Can anyone make heads (or tails)! Of these results. Explain them in better terms, does he really need a sedated scan?

Any thoughts would be amazing

I'm not a vet but a vet nurse. We don't usually sedate for a bladder scan unless the patient is uncooperative, can usually be done conscious. Alkaline urine can be caused by a uti so personally I'd probably wait until the antibiotic course is finished and repeat a urinalysis. The crystals can be caused by the uti/alkaline urine.

@Anonaymoose thanks for taking the time to reply. I was thinking along the same lines as you, they said scan the abdomen so maybe that’s why they want sedation rather not just the bladder area I’m guessing.
It’s hard as I don’t want to miss anything but equally don’t want to be seen off with tests essentially he doesn’t need or risk putting him under. X

Time for a new vet, you’re already unconvinced by their level of care. Find a new, independent vet.

Jam291 · 12/04/2023 19:14

@Sewingdufus

being 100 percent honest we have been thinking about changing to a local practice up the road but just kept getting pushed back on our list of things to do as such as (touch wood) we rarely used the vets

Find anew vet that is not part of a chain. We had a terrible experience when our dog was a puppy and she hurt her foot and the local vet (which was a part of a large chain) said we had to have X-rays (which also meant sedation). Following the X-ray, they said she had s broken bone and had to have an operation on her foot.

We sought a second opinion from an independent vet who said the X-ray images from the chain were so poor you cannot tell if the foot is broken or not. He recommended lead walking and rest for a week and review and thankfully she was fine!! Very scary experience.

Just re bumping this.

so he had this blood in his urine two weeks ago. I’ve just walked him and now, he does his usual wee, fine, then he ‘scents’ a lot (which is normal for him), then on the last two ‘scents’ there are blood droplets coming out.
He’s now finished his course of ABX…

Has anyone ever had symptoms like this before with their dog?
He is still eating, pooping, playing, running etc fine and showing absolutely no sign of pain or that he’s in discomfort.
(he is back to see the vet next week just looking for views).

He definitely needs an ultrasound and often to have them relaxed they do need some sedation. Just do it.

Frazzled1502 · 15/04/2023 23:43

I’m watching and waiting too. My gorgeous girl has the occasional blood wee too. We were told one occasion it was an infection so she had antibs. She’s utterly fine in every way also

MissingMoominMamma · 15/04/2023 23:50

A vet told us six years ago that our dog needed an operation on her leg as she was limping.

We weren’t convinced and let her rest it/walked her on the lead for about 6 weeks. Her leg has been absolutely fine ever since. No limp and she walks and runs just as she did before.

It was a very expensive and completely unnecessary procedure that they were telling us our dog needed.

Hope yours recovers well with the antibiotics.

Take him to a different vet. Ask around for recommendations, but he def needs seeing again, and you need some faith in who you're taking him to.

crazymare20 · 16/04/2023 13:49

This happened with my one of my dogs last year. She has bladder stones which needed to be removed. They didn’t sedate her though for the scan.

Jam291 · 16/04/2023 18:49

Hi all, thanks for your replies, he’s booked in to see the vets this week.

@crazymare20 did your girl show pain when she had bladder stones? He’s not showing any signs of pain (thankfully)!

If they wanted to take some urine directly from his bladder with a needle then they often sedate if the dog isn’t calm.
sounds like they are trying to get to the bottom of what is wrong, so I’m not too sure what you’re annoyed about.

crazymare20 · 16/04/2023 19:02

She didn’t initially, she has recurrent urine infections but eventually she started showing pain (shaking) and then the stones were found.

Sorry for reviving an old post, but wondered what the outcome was. My entire make dog has an enlarged prostate and is weeing blood with blood droplets coming out too. He;s now has a chip to chemically castrate him 1o days ago, but no improvement.

hi, sorry to hear about your dog it’s horrible when they have problems.
Our boy has been seen, examed etc, and there is nothing found to be wrong. He is still eating, playing, pooping, and (usually) weeing absolutely fine. He is still peeing blood occasionally, but he can go months without, it’s so odd. He’s a mystery!

The chemical castration implant takes up to 6 weeks to work so you are very early in that time scale. If it is benign prostatic hyperplasia there are other treatments that can help whilst the implant gets to work so I would go back to your vet.

Stickytreacle · 01/06/2024 07:53

My dog had these symptoms and the vet assumed it was stones, but when xrayed it turned out to be a tumour. I'd see a different vet if needed if you aren't happy with his treatment.
