Than King Charles cavaliers?

I am very confused about the differences between the two. And there seems more cavaliers (although still quite rare!) than King Charles spaniels

please could someone enlighten me!

huge thanks

They're the same thing.

I think that they're both the same dog. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

There were 3400 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels registered with the Kennel Club in 2022 as opposed to 68 King Charles
Spaniels. The latter are smaller, have a much shorter and upturned muzzle and a domed head.

I assume there will be a lot less health data available for the ‘Charlie’ as there are fewer of them.

They are different breeds.

A potted history - small spaniels of the Cavalier type became popular in the 17th Century. Over the next couple of centuries, dogs with shorter faces became generally popular and small spaniels were bred to have shorter and shorter faces.

In the early 20th Century, a movement developed to bring back the old style longer faced spaniel, using as a template a picture entitled 'Cavalier and his Pets'. A competition was held to find the spaniel most like this type. The winner and its descendants formed the breed we now know as the Cavalier King Charles spaniel. The original short faced small spaniels continued as the King Charles spaniel.

I believe they can be prone to hip problems.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 11/04/2023 07:53

They are far more “extreme” and imagine they would have a lot of the issues that extreme brachy dogs have. They are also incredibly hard to come by these days

My parents had 5 cavaliers over the years.
I understood that they were prone to heart issues, but all lived to a good age.

LoveMyKeeks · 11/04/2023 08:34

I've had 2 cavalier King Charles. One we have just lost at the age of 13. He has heart problems and hip issues but died of a stroke. We still have the youngest and he is turning 9 this month with no health issues. The oldest only got heart problems when he was 11.

My mum also had a Cav and he died of heart issues aged 10.

They're both prone to similar health problems unfortunately 😞

It's such a shame as personality wise they are amazing dogs. I've never met a nasty one yet.
