I noticed in another thread that the poster had trained their dog "to horses and bicycles"

Our wee dachshund is generally very good out and about and off lead - good recall, leave, stay, etc ... BUT NOT GOOD WITH BICYCLES.

We don't often meet them but sometimes one will appear from nowhere and he is quite capable of running into its path.

How do I train him around bicycles??

DH cycles so we can certainly test stuff.... just like to learn how!

Do you live near a popular cycle route? If so you could try sitting on a bench with treats ready and every time a cyclist goes past get dog to sit and look at you for a treat? My dog is not bothered by most cyclists, however teens on e scooters or mopeds that whizz around the local heritage park (signs saying not to) she is not sure on them - some she will ignore, some she will run away from depends if they are racing/revving.

I trained my dog and yes a lot of treats were involved. When she was a puppy she wanted to chase bikes so we did lots of off lead walking on the cycle path with a bag of treats. As soon as I saw a bike I got her to sit at the side of the path, focused on me, praise and treats until the bike had gone by. She ignores bikes now even though I don’t have treats with me.

Quintana - that sounds great... I think I need to do a bit of that... he's not scared of bikes but can walk in front of them without thinking ...

Keep it on a lead and pull it out of the cyclist's way if you cannot train it. A cycling friend sued a dog owner for a large sum of money after the dog ran in front of his bike and friend ended up with injuries including broken arm, shortly before a cycling holiday in US (which had to be cancelled) so substantial costs involved.

Put it on a lead when near paths?

Newpeep · 12/04/2023 13:40

You can train them not to bark and lunge but on things like cycle ways it's still going to be a risk. As a cyclist a loose uncontrolled dog is my worst nightmare!

We call our dog in and ask her to sit when a cyclist comes along if we are on a cycleway but as a rule I wouldn't walk a dog on one as it's too risky and I get bored of continually calling her in.

Yes that's the challenge - we don't walk on cycleways - It's just that occasionally where we are walking a cycle will appear out of the blue.
