Just looking for reassurance really. Our 12 year old cockapoo has been diagnosed with a sarcoma on her foot which means the toe joint needs amputating. There has been a 3 month delay in us being informed ( which i feel terrible about) and since biopsy was taken, although the vet says this will not have made a difference to outcome. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from anyone whose dog has had this type of surgery and desperately just hoping that this surgery will sort it out with no further spread/ problems.

My dog hasn’t got sarcoma but he had a toe amputated when he was 18 months old and it had little to no effect on him at all . Hope it goes well .

Sorry to hear this. It's heartbreaking seeing these things creep up on older dogs.

My dog had a toe amputated age 10. He did live to 13, but was terrified of the vet after that and used to get incredibly stressed. The recovery period was horrible, as he kept having to have the dressings changed for the first few weeks and found it very painful and distressing each time.

What kind of breed is your dog? I'm not sure I'd want to put a 12 year old through a GA and that operation, but I've always had big breeds who live to 13/14 maximum.

Thank you. I am worried about the dressings and someone needing to be with her. Did your dog try to get the dressings off or have to wear a collar ?
She is a cockerpoo, 12 years old 9 in July ). otherwise in very good health, very lively, still loves long walks, naughty, mischievous and playful. The vet has said the operation is usually successful and it's unlikely to return within her lifespan. I think they usually live to be about 15.I really do want to give her the best chance given how youthful she is otherwise. She had a GA last year to have some teeth removed and was fine, so I'm not worried about the anesthetic, although at her age there are always risks. the vet just said if untreated it can spread to the lungs.

Our dog had surgery in similar circumstances and lived happily for another three years. I'd do it again.

I would definitely go with the surgery as sarcoma can be really nasty if it spreads.

Hopefully she recovers well - most dogs adapt just fine post-amputation 🥰

Not a dog but a family member had a sarcoma and had it removed and is still with us many years later.

Thanks so much all for the reassurance.
