Strange behaviour in dog on heat

Our border terrier cross puppy is 7.5 months and has just come out of the bleeding phase of her first season. She has suddenly (this evening) become really agitated - kicking the floor behind her as she walks around, doing tiny wees everywhere (usually completely house trained) and scrabbling around in her blankets as if she's nesting. I'm presuming this is linked to her season? I'd ring the vet for advice if it wasn't so late! Thank you 😊

Yes, very likely. Although ours remained house trained, outside there were tiny wees every few steps, flinging her rear end around to spread it, lots of blanket scrabbling (but she does that anyway), and backing into anything that stayed still for 30 seconds.

Yes they can be a bit uncomfortable. Not much you can do about it except time and cuddles!

Our year old springer did similar and when vet checked her over she was lactating and having a phantom pregnancy. We had to up her exercise and hide her toys for a month as she was using them as a baby.

Phantom pregnancy

Wolfiefan · 05/04/2023 22:00

I would want a check for UTI. Plus look up symptoms of pyometra so you are aware.

Pestispeeved · 05/04/2023 22:01

The phantom pregnancy comes 58 - 68 days after the season. The more irrational behaviour they do when in season, the more likely a phantom is.

Love, cuddles and a bit of training to distract. Then consider when to spay.

What @Wolfiefan said.

Sorry to grate crash but I have a collie/lab cross. She's almost 8 months and she's constantly cleaning her lady area and nipples and nawing. Is this a sign she's likely to go into season soon? She's never been yet. She's also rubbing here self on the ground out walks. We don't want periods or babies and the vet said she was okay to get dressed from 6 months, it's just getting an appointment. X

JessieEssex · 05/04/2023 22:12

Thanks all. @Wolfiefan she's only been doing it for an hour or so this evening so I'll keep an eye on her - will ring the vet tomorrow if it continues.

@Cece92 you need a vet check. I’m not sure about the rubbing herself on the ground. Could be season. Could be something else.
To check for season look for swelling and bloody discharge. If she’s in season keep her on a lead and well away from off lead dogs. That way there won’t be any puppies.

Pestispeeved · 05/04/2023 22:17

Roll her over and check her bits, they swell up a good few days before any bleeding starts.

Pestispeeved · 05/04/2023 22:19

Ignore last comment, bitches can be most fertile in the few days after bleeding. Keep an eye on her, you have another week before she is safe to interact with other dogs.

Much brighter this morning, none of the strange behaviour apart from a large wee on the kitchen floor as soon as she got out of her crate. Both children have a sick bug this morning so I will be at home all day looking after all of them!
