Growls and is very aggressive to toys. Is this behaviour supposed to somehow be taught is wrong? Or do they grow out of it?

That would be called playing and is fine

Greenshake · 02/04/2023 13:36

Seriously? Your pup is playing and learning. It’s what they do!

PurpleParrots · 02/04/2023 13:39

The growling is a play growl. Very different from a growl of aggression

Newpeep · 02/04/2023 13:50

Ever seen a terrier play? Or heard them more likely 😂 They sound like they are killing whatever they’re playing with. It’s normal and no they don’t grow out of it.

Itstillgoeson · 02/04/2023 13:55

As long as it is too the toys and not resource guarding when you try to take the toys away.

ProbablyDogNappersHunX · 02/04/2023 21:14

It's completely normal play.

Growling can come about in play or as a warning. It's very context dependent.

Dogs should never, ever be punished for growling - even if it's being done in an aggressive way. The worst thing you could do would be to teach a dog not to give a warning - that could mean they go straight for a bite. There's nothing wrong with a dog communicating it's uncomfortable.

The canine ladder of communication would be an interesting read for you @AshDenny

I must admit I was shocked an hour or so after bringing my butter-wouldnt-melt inquisitive sweet puppy home when she really laid into her toy squirrel 😅 she didn't growl but she was doing the neck snap shaking and tearing fluff out of the tail etc. Poor squirrel, I was thinking she might carry it about like I've seen labs do with teddies 😁 (Yes, I'm a first time dog owner! No it didn't worry me for long)

Floralnomad · 02/04/2023 22:08

It’s perfectly normal , my terrier used to rip toys to bits and he is nearly 13 and still growls when he plays occasionally although he has stopped destroying his toys and he’s the friendliest dog you could find

bizzywiththefizzy · 03/04/2023 01:02

You'd be horrified to see how your puppy plays with their siblings it's brutal . 😃

My dog, who is 9, rips toys to shreds within minutes. When we meet up with his sister and her owner for walks we try to avoid the main paths because when playing they sound like they are about to kill each other. Other than that he is the softest, soppiest, cuddly staffie who likes nothing better than snoozing on the sofa or bed.

He won’t even touch my DDs toys or a plate of food left on the side because we have taught him they are not his. Anything new he is not to touch gets held tightly and we say ‘mine’ in a firm voice (don’t have to remind him for food now). Anything for him is given to him/plate put down with a light ‘for (his name), good boy.’ We did always stop, with a ‘gentle’ and redirect him if he was getting too rough playing with us as a pup, grabbing clothes, mouthing hands, clambering on us, etc
