My 8.5 yo greyhound has just been diagnosed with arthritis. He's been prescribed painkillers and is going back in two weeks to assess whether he's less stiff and potentially to start acupuncture.

We recently got him a new fancy bed and put non-slip tape on the stairs. He seems thrilled with the bed and sleeps all night on it with no issue, but it's in our bedroom upstairs and he doesn't always seem to want to use the stairs sometimes. On those days/nights he'll sleep on the sofa, but usually starts the night lying at the foot of the stairs which is sad to see. He obviously wants to be with us but doesn't feel up to it.

What should I do? I have slept downstairs with him before when he's been ill or had surgery, but as he will hopefully live for a few more years I can't really sleep downstairs indefinitely on half a sofa! I was thinking about moving his bed downstairs so he doesn't have to jump on and off the sofa, but will he be sad he doesn't have the option of sleeping in our room? Is that a crazy question?? Lol. I just love the old boy and want him to be happy and not in pain.

The vet also recommended getting him a ramp for the car. I'm not convinced he'll be brave enough for that and can physically lift him in and out of the car, but would lifting hurt him?

Any other tips for old doggos? Thanks!

Also, while I can lift him in and out of the car, I definitely wouldn't feel safe carrying him up or down the stairs! He's 35kg and I'm not THAT strong!

I would get a second bed for downstairs. He can then go upstairs if he feels like it but also be comfy on his downstairs bed.

Re ramp put it flat on the floor and put treats on it and let him walk on it on the floor flat. Gradually increase the incline until he is happy to walk on it into the car

Look at Canine Arthritis they have loads of excellent advice

We bought a plastic step to put next to the back door step to help our old dog get into the garden. It just helped to have two smaller levels than one larger level when he was coming in and out of the house. It was one like this:

We also gave the option of two beds; one upstairs and one downstairs. He eventually always picked the downstairs one, so we moved the extra upstairs one to the kitchen so he had one there and in the living room. I also added a sheep skin to one and he seemed to love that. He didn’t seem to mind the change to sleeping downstairs at all.

We had to take care on curbs as he got older. I took him to the dropped curbs wherever possible and changed walk routes so he didn’t have curbs to navigate. It is horrible to see them get old.

Re ramps. It’s important to get the right one that makes the dog feel safe and secure on it. I have Solvit ramps for my 36kg dog. They are very sturdy and secure feeling underfoot for the dog and have a non slip surface. We have been using one since our dog was 3 and she’s 12 now. I have honestly tried most makes and these are the best. Even my friends dog who used to jump in and out of my car will now use the ramp as a preference in his advancing years.

in addition to the pain killer and a acupuncture (we have it too) can you investigate librella injections with your vet. We started them 5 mths ago and they have completely changed our arthritic 12 year old dog.

Came on to suggest Librella injections too. Life changing for our lab.

She loves the ramp! Runs up quite happy - so much so has trapped DH’s hand a couple of times as he’s been attaching it.
