Do chihuahuas like walks?

I want a small dog, but one that would actually be happy to come camping, boating, come round Europe with me, whatever. Just on winter days, would also be satisfied with shorter walks... curious if a breed like a chihuahua would actually embrace the busy outside lifestyle a handful of times a year

Mine absolutely LOVES walks. Shes a long haired smooth coat and she has quite long legs. She runs so fast on the beach she's like one of the rabbits that the greyhounds chase round the tracks shes so fast. She loves being out and about.

I saw a chihuahua being walked in Venice today, on holiday with the family. Adorable and no idea how tiny it was. 😆

I’ve fostered a chihuahua. It had the stamina of a bison! Not sure if that is typical but, if it is, they definitely like walks!

Be aware they can live for 20 years, so it’s a huge commitment.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 31/03/2023 00:26

Yes. But please get from a decent breeder as many suffer terribly with bad knees.

My chi will walk alllllllll day. Seriously, blew my mind. I thought 15 mins twice a day would be enough!!

Hates rain and won’t go out. Loves snow bless him

A well-bred one should be fine to go in long walks but do be aware that they generally hate the cold and wet!

I have 2 chihuahuas! They would walk for England, but they like their home comforts, and live mostly under blankets in winter. And one of them hates the heat, she's a long coat. But my smooth coat is a sun seeker. Best little breed in the world imo (we also have a sausage dog)

I suppose it depends entirely on the individual. A friend has a couple and one would be fine, the other would hate it. You might be better with a Jack Russell- hardy and endless energy, big dog personality in a little body although mine loves a duvet day as much as the rest of us

Sweetladyjane · 31/03/2023 06:52

Mine loves being outside and will happily run all day. She’s a funny little thing and has no fear of playing with the big dogs we encounter on our walks. She is a bit of a princess though and doesn’t do rain.

I have an English Toy Terrier and they would fit your requirements. I know you didn’t ask about other breeds, but thought I would be cheeky and jump in, as ETTs are on the vulnerable breeds list and had their lowest numbers ever last year, which is absolutely tragic for such a fantastic little dogs. Half the problem is that no-one has ever heard of them, so we really need to raise their profile. I have had dogs for well over 30 years and had never heard of them before I happened across some information while researching breeds that would suit us.

Not quite as small as a Chihuahua, but still a toy breed that fits nicely on your lap and love their cuddles. Lots of them live happily with just short walks, but they are equally capable of enjoying camping, hiking, agility, etc. They also absolutely adore snuggling under blankets close to their people. Some of them aren’t keen on rain or water in general, but mine is perfectly happy to go out in all weathers (they’re single coated though, so he does have a fleece and a coat for colder weather) and loves his paddling pool and going in the sea. To be honest, I think some of that is down to early socialisation though.

Ours comes everywhere with us and after always having big dogs in the past, it’s been a revelation having one that we can easily take in shops, cafes, pubs, on public transport etc. Half the time, no-body even notices he’s there as he’s so well behaved, the other half we are stopped every few steps for people to ask what breed he is… or if he’s a Doberman puppy!

They are a very natural shape, iysim - full length muzzle, well proportioned frame, no exaggeration or in-bred structural issues at all and for us they just seemed a bit more robust than some more tiny breeds (ETTs are around 30 cm in height). They are so fast too, absolutely beautiful to watch (they have Italian Greyhound in their breeding going back a few generations) when running at full speed.

My Chi is 6 months old and he runs with my other dogs on our walks. He is no weakling at all. Yes he loves lap time at home but otherwise he is just as much of a dog as any other and it is fun to watch him keeping up with my other two.
