Reaction to steroids

We have a bulldog breed who is prone to seasonal allergies. Due to constant itching again recently we took her to the vets where she was prescribed two weeks worth of steroids. One week has passed and aside from increased thirst and urination, she’s her normal self. Last few days we noticed a change in her breathing, she can’t manage her usual walk without heavy panting and throughout the night we noticed shallow, fast breathing. Her energy levels have massively decreased. Spoke to vets who said this is a normal response to steroids and taking her off them too soon isn't advised. I appreciate that should be reassuring enough but I’ve been doing lots of googling (I know) and I can’t seem to find much info on this being a normal reaction to steroids. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Our collie was on high dose steroids for an autoimmune disease. He had quite heavy panting (also increased hunger, thirst).

The vet advised that the panting would get better as he got used to the steroids - I dont think it did. Despite the autoimmune disease he was a fit healthy dog but the panting was quite horrid to watch.

Yes - I walk a dog on steroids and this is exactly how she behaves. She's on them for life due to lots of health problems.

The heavy panting can be really distressing to watch but it doesn't seem to bother her and it certainly doesn't stop her from walking and playing as normal.

She's a 2yo collie mix.

Thanks both. Breathing seems better today although panting heavy during walk so we cut it short.
