Dog ate hash brownies

While we were away (in Amsterdam ironically) the dog consumed a large amount of brownies. These belonged to the dog sitter. Trip to the Emergency vets and she seems okay thankfully. I am a little less furious than I was and now wondering whether I should contribute to the vets fees, or make the sitter pay it all?

Is the sitter insured or was it a friend/family member?

SallyWD · 30/03/2023 12:52

Assuming the hash brownies were mafe bought by the sitter then yes, they're responsible and should pay the fees! If they were your hash brownies it's slightly different.

BillLius · 30/03/2023 12:53

I think a bit of deep fried grated potato will be fine.

FrankColumbo · 30/03/2023 12:54

The sitter should pay!

sorrynotathome · 30/03/2023 12:54

Do you mean brownies made with drugs? Or grated potato?

I was assuming these were hash brownies which would contain chocolate and cannabis rather than hash browns?

I'm assuming you're making a joke here
Its brownies made with hash not hash browns made with potatoes

KnickerlessParsons · 30/03/2023 12:55

Don't you have insurance?

lljkk · 30/03/2023 12:56

Partly depends if you ever want to use that sitter again. I mean, she'll never work for you again after you sue her, will she.

Does she have the money, because I imagine it was thousands.
Getting her to pay could be impossible

How many brownies were consumed, 1 kg or 50 grams? Was the hash or the chocolate more dangerous to doggo?

PuttingDownRoots · 30/03/2023 12:58

Whose brownies were they?

Big difference between the sitter bringing drugs into house, and dog getting into your own stash.

(Have a feeling insurance won't cover eating the owners illicit substances)

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/03/2023 12:58

Ddog ate dope, picked it up down a local dealing alley. We didnt know what was wrong with him, thought it was some kind of neuro thing. Off to the emergency vet who confirmed THC poisoning. He was off his face, had to have diazepam, fluids etc. He was fine in the end but £800 later.

If they were consumed in the house the sitter needs to pay.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 30/03/2023 12:59

Professional sitter then they pay, family or friend as a favour, put it down to bad character judgement.

I agree.

mauvish · 30/03/2023 13:01

I don't think you should have to pay, unless you've got insurance tht will cover it without penalty to you.

But other questions - was the sitter staying in your house whilst in possession, ie a live-in sitter? Were they off their head whilst staying in your house? Did they bake the cookies at your house? Did they have friends round for "coffee and cake" at your house? etc etc

---- if any of those is a yes then I wouldn't be letting them past my door in the future.

theemmadilemma · 30/03/2023 13:03

Their brownies, their cost.

I'm all for yamming down on a nice hash brownie, but if you leave them for the dog to get them, it's all on you.

I'd be willing to settle with my insurance costs if I had insurance I was willing to use.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 30/03/2023 13:49

Is this a professional, insured sitter or someone doing you a favour?

DforDogWoof · 31/03/2023 09:13

OMG, how are you so calm about this and even wondering if you should pay? I would be furious and really shaken. You said the edibles belonged to the sitter so they are liable. They are also really unprofessional so I would report them or at the very least leave a bad review. They could have killed your dog stone dead.

Bananalanacake · 31/03/2023 09:54

Isn't the chocolate in brownies also harmful to dogs.

ImAvingOops · 31/03/2023 10:40

The sitter has brought something that is poison to your dog into your house and not guarded your dog from it. If it's a paid sitter, paying the vet bill is the least I'd expect!
If it was a family member or friend doing you an unpaid favour, I'd probably claim off my insurance or pay the bill. I wouldn't want my family to be out of pocket for a mistake when trying to help me out.
But a paid sitter, would expect a professional standard of care from. And for them not to bring drugs into my house.

Yes, but it depends on the amount of cocoa, how much they eat and the weight of the dog.

Most medium sized dogs can get away with with small amounts of it without any issues.

ArianahX · 31/03/2023 12:09

I don't have a dog but if someone looking after my precious cat accidentally fed her some hash I'd be ripping them to shreds getting the all the vets bills out of them, never booking them again & giving them bad reviews.

ArianahX · 31/03/2023 12:10

If they were a 'family friend' well they soon wouldn't be.
