Emergency! Can't afford vet bill

I very recently took in a dog for an unwell family member.

They are not insured.

Today they got into my dad's bird seed whilst he was looking after him and is now very poorly.

I do not have the funds to pay for the vet bill. At all. What can I do?

His previous owner is not an issue.

Do you have PDSA nearby? I think they might need proof you are in receipt of benefits but their role is to provide veterinary care for people who are on low or no income.

can you go to the pdsa?

GordonShakespearedoesChristmas · 28/03/2023 20:34

Do you have a PDSA near you?

Pixiedust1234 · 28/03/2023 20:35

Most vets are willing to let you pay in installments. Contact them and explain.

NoSquirrels · 28/03/2023 20:35

Have you taken the dog to the vet? Or are you not going in case of the fee?

NoSquirrels · 28/03/2023 20:36

Can your dad help?

pncr · 28/03/2023 20:36

PDSA? Or negotiate a payment plan with the vet?

Mumof1andacat · 28/03/2023 20:36

Definitely contact pdsa

See whether you can pay in installments? You won't be the first to have difficulty paying a large bill. Some vets can allow this, but not all, as they are not credit establishments.

Otherwise, try charities such as the PDSA or the RSPCA, for advice if nothing else. Chalk it up to experience and once through this get insurance in place.

Poorly in what way, has the shits/ throwing up or in actual pain? Some dogs are greedy but it passes through and they don't learn either. Mine certainly doesn't, especially with chocolate.

I was actually wondering this. It may not be as bad as you fear, though obviously I can offer no guarantees there.

You say the dog has eaten bird seed? The number of times my old labrador did something ridiculous like that!! He generally just got the squits and would upchuck for a day or two because he had bellyache., during which I limited his food or just gave him plain chicken and rice. He'd then be right as rain again.

I suppose it depends somewhat on how much of the stuff the dog actually ate.
