Traumatised over putting our beloved dog to sleep.

Last Thursday we had to put our beloved pet to sleep. She was nearly fifteen, a good age I know but she was always so spritely and everyone could not believe that she was that old because she was so lively.
She was a lovely, sweet, gentle little dog who was lovely around our five grandchildren.
She had two lumps on her stomach which have been there for many years which didn’t seem to bother her and were always checked out by vets over the years and when examined by various vets, we were told they were harmless and to keep an eye on them.
This last week we noticed some changes with her. She slept for most of the day, was off her food and didn’t trot around the house as she usually did.
I put it down to her age. The day before she passed I had to carry her home from her walk as she just stood still and wouldn’t/ couldn’t walk home. Something that had never happened before as she always loved her walks.
worried sick we took her to the vet who told us that she had cancer and it would be kinder to put her to sleep as she was in extreme pain. I’m so confused as she didn’t cry out and there were no signs that she was in any pain. As hard as it was, we couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering and agreed to let her go. We are devastated that we will never see our beautiful girl again and struggling to come to terms with our loss.

Your lovely dog had a wonderful life. She had a very good end, as she was only poorly for such a short time. Of course you are devastated, but you've been a great owner . I'm sure you have lots of good memories. Massive hugs xx

Thank you for your kind words.

Dogs often don’t cry out - they show pain differently to people and you really wouldn’t want her to be screaming in pain before making a decision.

you’ve done absolutely the right thing.

the below is a pain scale for dogs - it describes some of the behaviours they show.

I should add - that scale is for post surgery pain so cancer pain may be different but hopefully you can see that there’s lots of signs.

the stopping in the walk and sudden change in behaviour are quite strong indicators in such an old fog.

it sounds like she had a lovely life with you 💐

Your lucky, lucky dog to have you. It will get better because you'll come to accept you've done the right thing by her, horrible as it is for those of us who have to experience this.

This is so sad and I m so sorry you lost her. I think though it is a privilege to be able to make that decision for our pets so they don't feel pain. I think it is very unlikely she was in a lot of pain for very long. You paid attention to her and realised long before many people would and did the brave and right thing. They look at you to save them and choosing to give them a peaceful end out of pain is saving them just as much as keeping them safe and sound during the rest of their lives. Your decision to let her go in this gentle manner was the kindest and most loving event of her life. But I am so sorry x

Thank you all for your kind messages. It helps more than you know. It will be a week tomorrow my gorgeous girl was put to sleep and it's getting harder without her. The house feels so empty even when it's full. I know lots of people go through this pain and it's good to talk. Thank you all x

Op as a fellow dog owner I'm sending love. Our lovely boy is almost 15 too. He has been there through so many eras of my life. I know my time with him is coming to an end and I'm giving him extra hugs tonight after reading your post. As others have said, your dog was so lucky. She was loved every day of her life. Best wishes x

We lost our almost 15 yr old last year. He also had a silent tumour growing, it was only the last 48 hrs he went downhill. They have a ridiculously high tolerance to pain, he'd been about a month before for annual jags and check up and been fine. Your doggie sounds to have had a wonderful life and you must be missing her so much. Sending thoughts to you.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 30/03/2023 00:43

I'm so sorry. I lost my gorgeous boy last year. I miss him so much. You did the right thing and let her go with dignity when she was showing signs that she was unwell.

SoupDragon1066 · 30/03/2023 12:25

It was your last, biggest act of kindness. Always remember that.

They leave a massive void for sure but your dog had a lifetime of happiness with you and you can’t ask for more than that.

DforDogWoof · 31/03/2023 09:16

I am so sorry to hear of your very sad loss. It is never easy but you did the right and loving thing and your doggie will be saying a big "Thank You". Doggie was in pain, the vet said it was for the best and doggie didn't suffer. That is real love xxx
