Will regularly taking my Labrador to a groomers help?

We have a small lab she's only 21kg and we also have a small house (two up two down) and the amount of hair she drops is ridiculous. Ideally my home needs to be hoovered everyday, but I'm struggling to do this.

Would it be worth taking her to a groomers regularly to have her bathed and brushed?

Has anyone done this and found a difference?

Before we had my daughter we would bathe her about once a month but honestly we are just exhausted and as much as I would like to do it myself it's at the bottom of the list

Can't you just brush her?

Stugs · 26/03/2023 16:28

I mean of course you can take her to a groomers, but we brush ours outside a few times a week which helps.

Buy a shedding blade and groom daily outside.

Another asking why you can’t do it. Regular brushing and bathing used to sort ours out. And get a robot hoover.

SlipSlidinAway · 26/03/2023 16:36

You don't need to bathe her every month. Very bad for her skin. Labradors do shed - it goes with the territory.

Take her outside regularly for a good brushing - or take the brush with you when you're out for a walk.

We don't bathe our Labradors. When they get wet - from swimming or being out in the rain, we give them a good towelling. If they've got very dirty I might get a bucket of water and use it to slosh over their paws and tummy with a wet towel. The only time I've used shampoo is when one has rolled in something nasty. And then I just shampoo the affected area.

You want a dual sided shedding blade. I was amazed how much it got off our lab the first time I used it. With regular use it’s made a huge difference to how much hair I’m hoovering. She hates a bath, so I only do that maybe every 2-3 months (sooner if she’s got mucky or stinks). They are less than a tenner on Amazon, and miles better than any of the (many) other brushes we have tried.

A groomer will be able to give them a shedding treatment that pulls out all the dead hair. If you've ever seen one do it, you'll know that they get absolutely covered in dead hair. Much more efficient that waiting for it to fall out by itself, and much less hoovering needed! Once a month/every 6 weeks would make a huge difference.

We use a furminator on ours, we prefer it to a shedding blade, it’s personal choice really.

SlipSlidinAway · 26/03/2023 16:50

Yes - we use a furminator - couldn't remember what it was called. Amazing things.

Choconut · 26/03/2023 16:50

I used to brush ours but the groomers did a far superior job. Definitely worth a try IMO.

RedCarsGoFaster · 26/03/2023 16:59

By all means, get her groomed, but then invest in a Furminator brush and keep on top of it that way.

I also highly recommend a robot hoover or two - we have one on each floor and they keep up with the fur from a husky cross and a Romanian wotsit.

Well that's what I thought.

I used to hoover my terrier. He just used to stand there and let us do it.

tabulahrasa · 26/03/2023 21:41

If you can spend like 5 minutes most days using a shedding blade or a rubber curry comb, you should notice a huge difference, but... labs do shed a lot.

HRTeatime · 26/03/2023 22:31

Great clip here of a shedding blade at work (on a horse, but does the same thing to a lab)…

I’d also like to point out that clearly, despite me being careful about cookies, my tablet is obviously spying on everything I say or type about, as this popped up from nowhere on my feed😳

Is the shedding blade cutting the hair or pulling dead hair out?

Polkadotties · 26/03/2023 22:51

My lab goes to the groomers once a month for a wash and blow dry. She barely sheds in the house but they say they get loads of hair out of her with their big blasters.

Furminators cut the hair rather than remove it, try an Equigroomer instead as they pull the dead hair out of the coat.Equigroomer

Furminators have a very fine comb inside, not a blade, they don't cut.

It’s just combing out dead hairs.
