Hi, need some suggestions please
When my dog was 16 weeks old he broke his leg and had to have surgery. Fast forward 7 yrs later- for some reason (maybe arthritis?) he is chewing his leg and has made the surgery scar inflamed. Im cleaning it daily and putting on cream and bandaging it, but now hes taking the bandage off when im not looking and licking and biting it. Obv i shall take him to vets if he continues but wondered if anyone had any advice?
Thank you

Can you put something safe but rancid tasting on it?

I would think he's licking it because it hurts, especially if it's a new behaviour. I'd take him to the vet for a check over.

Have you checked his teeth? Teething? Ddogs can chew to try and transfer pain. Or distract with a high value chew?

IsItMeOrEveryoneElse · 25/03/2023 19:20

Ooo ill look that up Treeabove the fire
I will take him to vets, I think he has made it sore licking it so how wont leave it alone! 2bh i dont know what the vets can do that im not doing?

If it's something like arthritis then the vets can help to support with anti inflammatory drugs/ pain relief. It could be a hot spot or dermatitis as well.

Defo get it checked out

Mindymomo · 25/03/2023 19:27

If he’s licking it constantly it may be infected.

SeeWhatYouGetWhenYouAskAStupidQuestion · 25/03/2023 19:29

The dog is evidently distressed and/or in pain. Please take him to a vet.

If your vet confirms there's nothing serious going on, and it's just a bad habit (my dog will lick and chew any injury he has) you can get some stuff from amazon called bitter yuk. Tastes grim, Stops them chewing/licking, and it's suitable to be used if the wound is still sore, and won't irritate or make it sting.

Thank you notafruit. I shall look this up. If its not serious now it will be if he doesnt leave it alone 😔
