Really delicious dog food

amaretti1999 · 24/03/2023 16:03

My lovely dog is 8 and is allergic to a long list of things.
She also has a heart condition which is deteriorating.
I currently buy her Butternut Box as they have 3 flavours that don't contain the things that are a problem for her.
She's got bored of these and isn't very excited when they are served.
Can anyone recommend a brand that their dog loves? I would need to check out the ingredients for allergens but am keen to really treat her as the prognosis is probably not good 😞.
Thanks.

I noticed that very best wet dog food on allaboutdogfood website is called Rockster. It is ruinously expensive and looks very good indeed. They are a really good site to compare foods and you’d get lots of recommendations for the good stuff on it - they cover raw, wet and dry.
if by ‘the prognosis is not good’ you mean she doesn’t have long to live I’d be hand feeding her steak and all the most delicious human food she isn’t allergic to before you say goodbye - and I am so sorry. I know that particular pain well.

@Sapin Thank you - I will look.
I think if she reacts well to the increased medication we aren't at that stage yet but realistically she's not going to improve long term.

ROR from Pets Corner is worth a go, my dog thought it was delicious. ROR is raw food and is frozen, it comes in little rounds so easy to defrost and serve. Ruinously expensive though.

Maybe keep the butternut food as the nutritional base if suits her and use human foods that can rotate as more interesting toppings which maybe easier to manage with the allergies. I used to make my dog veg/meat with some carb stews in slow cooker as needed to be low phosphorus, overnight oats with bit goat milk and some berries or just some tinned tomato sardines with lot water to make soupy as it's more the smell. Sprinkling of nutritional yeast or fenugreek powder can stimulate the appetite but depends if their ok for your dog.
I did consult a canine nutritionist but as didn't go full homecooked it wasn't such a major concern to balance it all.

Different Dog is the same concept as Butternut Box, but has more recipes to choose from - 12 I think, and they occasionally do seasonal recipes as well: e.g. a Christmas recipe.

The only difference is that Different Dog don't use lentils - just the fresh cooked meat and vegetables. The packaging is better too.

I always top my dogs' food with something tasty - corned beef, chicken, beef, sardines (in oil). They absolutely love it. Problem is, if I happen to run out of topper, my girls look at me as if to say "Do you really expect me to eat that shite?".

What area are you from, I only ask as our dog is on raw but it's limited to S/E. I've just brought a mincer to try to make it ourselves as our dog also has allergies and currently only has 3 different meals.

I batch cook food for my JRT who also has allergies, and mix this with Lily's Kitchen dry food. My cooked food comprises: slow boiled beef or pork mince, or poached white fish, or tinned sardines. So one form of these proteins mixed with boiled potatoes, and loads of steamed mixed veg: sprouts, carrots, beans, broccoli, cabbage. I portion all of this up into reusable small plastic pots and stash in the freezer.

Thanks everyone - she's looking a lot perkier this morning 😊
