DDog (Collie x ) is 14 years old and has suffered with Anal Furunculosis for many years. It’s managed with preds although the last 12 months we’ve had to increase the dose due to chronic symptoms.
Otherwise she’s a healthyish dog who still walks several times a day and is still obsessed with her nightly dental stick. We struggle to keep weight on her (steroids) and she has noticeable muscle wastage on her hind legs and rump.
The last six weeks she’s fallen several times. The tiled floor isn’t helping her as she doesn’t have the strength to right herself. She’s not quite dragging her legs but there is a lack of range of movement. When walking she can still stride out and needs to be in the lead. It’s at home we’ve seen her struggle the most. If one of the other DDogs steps in front of her it’s as much as she can do to stay upright.
We’ve seen the vets three times in the last week and are going back again today as she’s not been great this weekend. They’re said she has noticeable muscle wasting due to the steroids. We are looking at next steps. Has anyone experienced this? We’re looking into hydrotherapy for her but I’d like to understand what the likely prognosis might be. Has anyone had success with hydrotherapy? If so how long did it take to see results?
Other than this, I don’t know what other options we have. We can’t stop the preds, or even reduce the dose. She’s 14 now and the last thing we want is for her to be in pain (she’s also on daily paracetamol). I’m just reaching out to the internet in the hope that someone more experienced might be able to help her. Thanks.
