The puppy shat upstairs!

DPup, 17 weeks old, house training going well-or so I thought. But twice now she’s managed to get upstairs and has shat on the floor.

Trying to get into puppy psych-I’m guessing because she’s been confined to downstairs she doesn’t yet know she can’t shit upstairs. So how do I teach her that the WHOLE house is a no go for toileting? I don’t ever remember having this problem with older DDog.

I know at her age accidents may happen and todays was due to lack of watching on my part, but prevention is better than a cure so they say-so I’d like to nip this one in the bud.

How does she currently let you know she wants to go outside for the toilet?

I bought a bell on a ribbon for the door and everytime we opened and closed it- we'd ring the bell. Puppy soon learnt to ring it to alert us.

I'm not saying its fool proof. Ours is 18mths now and only yesterday did a wee in the lounge whilst playing ball with us!

She’s tiny, you’re still in house training mode. Are you cleaning up accidents using an enzyme cleaner?

Just carry on as you are, she’ll get it eventually!

I didn't let our puppy upstairs until toilet training was done. Is he on his own upstairs? At that age they still need a lot of supervision and regular opportunities to go outside and get it right.

My latest pup had a few accidents in my DS (who is away at uni) room but was reliable everywhere else. Because we didn’t use that room much I think she just didn’t think of it the same as rest of the house.

I then put a couple of old sheets in her bed for a couple of nights so they had her scent and she thought of them as bedding and lay them on DS’s floor. Dogs hate to mess where they sleep.

Also, whenever I went upstairs with her I would take her in there for a few minutes to sit on the floor and play with her.

No more accidents.

@MuttsNutts thanks that’s great advice. Will do those things.

For those that asked, currently she asks by sitting at the living room door and looking at me longingly. I don’t know whether a bell will work as she’s deaf. I do use a good enzyme cleaner. And she’s just worked out how to get upstairs so tends to go up stealth like!
