Where to find mixed breed puppies

Leomonberet · 13/03/2023 21:48

Apart from dogs4homes?

we have been on the search for a mixed breed puppy, we don’t know anyone with puppies available and would prefer an mixed breed rather than pedigree. I don’t trust gumtree and I’m not sure about dogs4homes.

If you live rurally, ask around - local vet, ads on the board in the farm suppliers. Just be aware of the mix - a working breed springer X cocker (sprocker) will be very full-on.

Local ads let you check out the breeder and ask about for anyone who knows them.

Otherwise ask local rescue centres. They do get random litters in, but a lot won't re-home if you have young DC at home.

lobeliasb · 14/03/2023 00:10

Why do you want a mixed breed? You'll probably not find one all that easily if you want an old fashioned "mutt". People like to breed "cross-breeds" now and chart a mint for them.

We got ours through gumtree.

Normal family, they had the mum and the dad, never bred them before. £200 for a cocker\cavalier.

MultipleVeganPies · 14/03/2023 06:08

What kind of crossbreed?

I am a lurcher girl and know lurcher people 😁

got mine through word of mouth recommendations

you can join a (cross) breed FB group, connect with people who like those same breeds

Fuctifin0 · 14/03/2023 06:11

Our local rescues have no end of mixed breeds.

Newpeep · 14/03/2023 10:50

Do you mean first cross? There are few or no real mixes now due to a variety of factors. My last dog was a real terrier hound mix. health wise bombproof. Behaviourally a mess. She was a rescue though.

What draws you to a cross? If it’s health then they’re only as healthy as the parents. You’d be better going for a health tested pedigree as health testing of crosses are rare. If it’s a complete mix and gamble of temperaments then you'll probably get that.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 14/03/2023 19:04

I have two (shock horror) both came from pets 4 homes.

You will know when you go to meet pup if everything is okay-it will feel right. When we were buying our older dog we went to view two others before hand, 1 just didn’t feel right and the second was downright disgusting puppy farm-I walked out of that house and reported them to the rspca immediately as I was so concerned.

Wolfiefan · 14/03/2023 19:11

Rescues.
And do your research on the separate breeds to see what you might end up with.

lmnabc · 14/03/2023 19:28

Rescue centres

Leomonberet · 15/03/2023 06:32

We can’t take a rescue dog as we have young children, been checking the local ones for years and have only ever seen 1 puppy come up and it was not right for us.

I mean a ‘mutt’, not a designer cross that is pricey. There are so many accidental litters out there it’s just where to find them and how do I know the seller is trustworthy?

Thanks for the suggestions I will join more local FB groups and keep looking at pets4homes.

Try preloved as well

This is so true! I desperately wanted a "mutt" and they just don't seem to exist anymore - they get called golden cockerdoodleschnauzhounds and cost £2500.

We tried rescues but got turned down for the most ridiculous reasons - I gave up after one of them refused to let us have a dachshund-size dog on the grounds it might jump our (6ft) garden fences.

We ended up with a pedigree Spaniel and he's gorgeous and I adore him. But I'd have been just as happy with a hardy little Heinz 57.

Good luck with the search!

notthisagainforest · 15/03/2023 07:07

I do t know why you are against rehoming kennels ? Our local council ones take all the strays for our area and we got our lurcher from there. Desperate for some tlc but the best dog we could have asked for

Auntieobem · 15/03/2023 07:14

There are no reputable breeders of mutts. Either dog has become accidentally pregnant (and therefore not been spayed etc) or they have purposely bred - and what reputable reason would there be for that??

Roseshavethorns · 15/03/2023 07:21

We got our pup from a rescue centre (unwanted litter). He was 12 weeks old.
I second the advice to try and find out everything you can about all the breeds in your dog and prepare for the worst characteristics of all the breeds.

ScottBakula · 15/03/2023 07:30

I would try smaller local rescue kennels , even breed specific ones as they may be able yo put the word out for you.

Also doggy day care / dog walkers may know of mutts wanting a home.

I agree with pp there is no such thing as a mutt now , they are all stupidly named mulit crosses . Someone introduced my to their Wolfradoor a while ago , a x gsd and lab but apparently the male gsd looked a bit like a wolf so that is what was put on its 'papers' home printed documents

BaroldFromEastenders · 15/03/2023 07:36

my mongrels came from Greece. One of them was born in a rescue and she came over when she was 15 weeks old but that may be too old if you want a proper baby puppy. I looked abroad specifically because I wanted a rescue but wanted a real Heinz 57, not a crossbreed

MultipleVeganPies · 15/03/2023 07:56

@Auntieobem well maybe but there is a notable exception for lurchers

lurchers are a “cross breed” or “mutt” that have existed for many centuries

there are definitely reputable lurcher breeders who breed for health.

lurchers are actually very cheap as well, compared to goldenpoos or labradoodlewawas

CleaningOutMyCloset · 15/03/2023 08:08

Get your name down with a number of rescue centres, local, smaller ones, are the best, a lot will do 'foster with a look to adopt', so you can have the dog at home, look after it and chose to adopt if you think it's right for you. They will also have puppies come in, a lot of which are mongrels

IngGenius · 15/03/2023 08:29

Dont get a cross breed thinking it will be healthier than a pedigree.

The dogs involved in the breeding will still need to be health tested and that is usually the issue with many cross breeds is that they are not health tested.

If you breed dogs that both may get HD then the risk is the same as getting a pedigree dog.

Hoppinggreen · 15/03/2023 08:31

Vets quite often know about puppies that are due/have recently arrived

user1465390476 · 15/03/2023 08:34

There are always crossbreed puppies on the Many Tears Rescue website. There’s quite a few of them on there now. They rehome nationwide.

Leomonberet · 15/03/2023 08:41

I’m not against rehoming kennels. As I’ve said the ones I’ve spoken to won’t rehome to homes with small children, and I rarely ever see puppies
